Multicenter Study Comparative StudyPediatric metaxalone ingestions reported to Texas poison control centers, 2000-2007.
The purpose of this study was to describe the pattern of metaxalone ingestions by young children reported to poison control centers. ⋯ Pediatric metaxalone ingestions reported to Texas poison control centers usually resulted in minor or no effect. Most ingestions did not require hospitalization.

Multicenter Study Comparative StudyPotential impact of peripheral intravenous catheter placement on resource use in the pediatric emergency department.
In an era of pediatric emergency department (PED) overcrowding and diminishing health care resources, routine peripheral intravenous (PIV) catheter placement in the pediatric population requires evaluation because it might directly impact PED efficiency. This study aims to determine the utility of routine PIV catheter placement during phlebotomy. ⋯ Nearly half of the PIV catheters placed in the PED were unused. Unused PIV catheters represent an inefficient use of limited resources that could be redistributed to improve ED efficiency, flow, and resource use.

Multicenter Study Comparative StudyEpidemiology of psychiatric-related visits to emergency departments in a multicenter collaborative research pediatric network.
Describe the epidemiology of pediatric psychiatric-related visits to emergency departments participating in the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network. ⋯ Pediatric psychiatric-related visits require more prehospital and emergency department resources and have higher admission/transfer rates than non-psychiatric-related visits within a large national pediatric emergency network.

Multicenter StudyFactors associated with longer emergency department length of stay for children with bronchiolitis : a prospective multicenter study.
Emergency department (ED) length of stay (LOS) is a quality of care measure and, when prolonged, contributes to ED crowding. Bronchiolitis, a common seasonal illness of infants, provides an opportunity to examine factors affecting ED LOS. ⋯ In this prospective multicenter study of children younger than 2 years with bronchiolitis, multiple factors were associated with longer ED LOS. These factors suggest the following steps to help shorten ED LOS: optimizing translation services, improving primary care provider rates, enhancing overnight patient flow, forgoing chest x-rays, and developing evidence-based admission criteria.

Multicenter StudyReferral and resource use patterns for psychiatric-related visits to pediatric emergency departments.
To describe the patterns of referral and use of resources for patients with psychiatric-related visits presenting to pediatric emergency departments (EDs) in a pediatric research network. ⋯ Children with psychiatric-related visits seem to require substantial ED resources. Interventions are needed to reduce the burden on the ED by increasing the linkage to mental health services, particularly for suicidal youths.
