Multicenter StudyEvaluation of performance of A1c and FPG tests for screening newly diagnosed diabetes defined by an OGTT among tuberculosis patients-a study from India.
The methods used for diagnosis of diabetes have limitations particularly in situations associated with stress hyperglycemia. Aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of A1c and fasting plasma glucose (FPG) tests for screening newly diagnosed diabetes (NDD) defined by OGTT among tuberculosis (TB) cases in India. ⋯ HbA1c performed better than FPG as a screening tool for newly diagnosed diabetes among subjects with TB.

Review Meta AnalysisMeta-analysis of methylcobalamin alone and in combination with lipoic acid in patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy.
To compare the efficacy and safety of daily lipoic acid (300-600 mg i.v.) plus methylcobalamin (500-1000 mg i.v. or im.) (LA-MC) with that of methylcobalamin alone (MC) on diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). ⋯ The results of the meta-analysis show that treatment with LA-MC for 2-4 weeks is associated with better outcomes in NCV and neuropathic symptoms relative to MC treatment. However larger well-designed studies are required to confirm this conclusion.

Multicenter StudyCriteria influencing the choice of starting insulin regimen in patients with type 2 diabetes in routine clinical practice: baseline data from the Algerian cohort of the A₁chieve study.
To examine the criteria that may influence physicians' choice of starting insulin in type 2 diabetes patients in routine practice in Algeria as a sub-analysis of the A₁chieve study. ⋯ In routine practice, physicians in Algeria are more likely to prescribe basal insulin at initiation of insulin therapy in type 2 diabetes. The prescription of a premix insulin therapy correlated with poor glycaemic control and the incidence of microvascular complications.

Medical expenditures associated with major depressive disorder among privately insured working-age adults with diagnosed diabetes in the United States, 2008.
We aimed at estimating excess medical expenditures associated with major depressive disorder (MDD) among working-age adults diagnosed with diabetes, disaggregated by treatment mode: insulin-treated diabetes (ITDM) or non-insulin-treated diabetes (NITDM). ⋯ Among working-age adults with diabetes, MDD was associated with substantial excess medical expenditures. Implementing the effective interventions demonstrated in clinical trials and treatment guidelines recommended by professional organizations might reduce the economic burden of MDD in this population.

Plasma SFRP5 levels are decreased in Chinese subjects with obesity and type 2 diabetes and negatively correlated with parameters of insulin resistance.
To detect plasma secreted frizzled-related protein (SFRP) 5 levels in Chinese healthy, obese and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) subjects and to investigate the relationships between plasma SFRP5 levels and body fat parameters, insulin resistance, glucolipid metabolism and inflammation. ⋯ Plasma levels of SFRP5 were decreased in Chinese obese and T2DM subjects. SFRP5 was an independent factor affecting glucolipid metabolism, inflammation and IR. It may play an important role in the pathogenesis of obesity and T2DM.
