To analyze the association of patient- and treatment-related factors with the onset of radiation pneumonitis in a homogeneously treated cohort of patients suffering from small cell lung cancer (SCLC). ⋯ In this series, high-dose radiation volume parameters, i.e., V(30) and especially V(40), were identified as the most important factors for the development of radiation pneumonitis. Low-dose radiation volume parameters and clinical parameters played an inferior role in predicting the pneumonitis risk.

Dose escalation in patients receiving whole-brain radiotherapy for brain metastases from colorectal cancer.
Whole-brain radiotherapy (WBRT) alone is the most common treatment for brain metastases from colorectal cancer, as most patients are not candidates for more aggressive therapies such as resection or radiosurgery. The standard WBRT regimen, 30 Gy in ten fractions (10 x 3 Gy), has generally resulted in poor outcomes. This study investigated whether an escalation of the WBRT dose improves these results. ⋯ These data suggest that patients with brain metastases from colorectal cancer treated with WBRT alone appeared to benefit from escalation of the radiation dose beyond 10 x 3 Gy in terms of improved OS and LC.

To evaluate the impact of the clinical target volume (CTV) and fraction dose on quality of life (QoL) after external-beam radiotherapy (EBRT) for prostate cancer. ⋯ The risk of adverse QoL changes after EBRT for prostate cancer cannot be derived from the dose-volume histogram alone. Seminal vesicles can be included in the CTV up to a moderate total dose without adverse effects on QoL. Apart from a longer recovery period, higher fraction doses were not associated with higher toxicity.

A randomized trial comparing hypofractionated and conventionally fractionated three-dimensional external-beam radiotherapy for localized prostate adenocarcinoma : a report on acute toxicity.
To compare acute gastrointestinal (GI) and genitourinary (GU) toxicity between patient groups with localized prostate adenocarcinoma, treated with conventionally fractionated (CFRT) and hypofractionated (HFRT) three-dimensional conformal external-beam radiotherapy (3D-CRT). ⋯ In this first evaluation, the HFRT schedule is feasible and induces acceptable or even lower acute toxicity compared with the toxicities in the CFRT schedule. Extended follow-up is needed to justify this fractionation schedule's safety in the long term.

Survival benefit with radiation therapy in node-positive breast carcinoma patients.
Postoperative radiation therapy (RT) has been the subject of discussion, especially in patients with one to three positive lymph nodes (< or = 3 pN+) in the axillary dissection. The authors investigated whether postoperative RT provides a survival benefit for pT1-2 pN+ breast cancer patients. ⋯ RT provides a survival benefit in patients with < or = 3 or > or = 4 pN+; the indication for postoperative RT should therefore be adapted in future consensus meetings.
