A late recognition of tapia syndrome: a case report and literature review.
Tapia syndrome is characterized by concurrent paralysis of the recurrent laryngeal and hypoglossal nerves. The mechanism is associated with airway manipulation in 70% of patients and is attributed to compression or stretching of these nerves. ⋯ Recovery is excellent in 30% of patients, incomplete in 39% of patients, and none in over 26% of patients. A case of a 48-year-old woman is described, who was diagnosed with Tapia syndrome 3 years after the suspected injury.

Treatment of bleeding upper aerodigestive tract tumor-a novel approach with antifibrinolytic agent: case series and literature review.
Symptomatic bleeding among patients with advanced upper aerodigestive tract tumor is a challenging problem. Given the limited options for topical treatment, embolization is often required to control the hemorrhage. There are recent reported cases of novel and successful treatment of patients with recalcitrant tracheo-bronchial bleed with tranexamic acid. We therefore described our initial experience of four consecutive cases of patients with bleeding from advanced aerodigestive tract tumor, successfully treated with oral tranexamic acid. ⋯ 4.

External branch of the superior laryngeal nerve monitoring during thyroid and parathyroid surgery: International Neural Monitoring Study Group standards guideline statement.
Intraoperative neural monitoring (IONM) during thyroid surgery has gained widespread acceptance as an adjunct to the gold standard of visual identification of the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN). Contrary to routine dissection of the RLN, most surgeons tend to avoid rather than routinely expose and identify the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve (EBSLN) during thyroidectomy or parathyroidectomy. IONM has the potential to be utilized for identification of the EBSLN and functional assessment of its integrity; therefore, IONM might contribute to voice preservation following thyroidectomy or parathyroidectomy. We reviewed the literature and the cumulative experience of the multidisciplinary International Neural Monitoring Study Group (INMSG) with IONM of the EBSLN. A systematic search of the MEDLINE database (from 1950 to the present) with predefined search terms (EBSLN, superior laryngeal nerve, stimulation, neuromonitoring, identification) was undertaken and supplemented by personal communication between members of the INMSG to identify relevant publications in the field. The hypothesis explored in this review is that the use of a standardized approach to the functional preservation of the EBSLN can be facilitated by application of IONM resulting in improved preservation of voice following thyroidectomy or parathyroidectomy. These guidelines are intended to improve the practice of neural monitoring of the EBSLN during thyroidectomy or parathyroidectomy and to optimize clinical utility of this technique based on available evidence and consensus of experts. ⋯ 5

Symmetrical lipomatosis of the tongue-a rare cause of macroglossia: diagnosis, surgical treatment, and literature review.
Symmetrical lipomatosis of the tongue is an extremely rare condition. To date, only eight cases have been reported in the literature. ⋯ Glossectomy was performed to reduce the size of the tongue and for diagnosis. The literature is reviewed and clinical characteristics, pathology, and surgical treatment are discussed.

Development of a disease-specific quality-of-life questionnaire for anterior and central skull base pathology--the skull base inventory.
Anterior and central skull base lesions and their surgical treatment (endoscopic or open approaches) can affect quality of life. A disease-specific instrument is needed to compare quality of life for different surgical approaches. ⋯ The Skull Base Inventory is a disease-specific quality-of-life instrument. Psychometric properties have yet to be tested. It may serve to compare quality of life for endoscopic or open procedures.
