Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical Trial
Efficacy of single-dose dexamethasone as adjuvant therapy for acute pharyngitis.
Pharyngeal inflammatory pain is reduced by a single dose of dexamethasone. ⋯ Single-dose dexamethasone appears to be a safe, effective, and inexpensive adjunctive treatment for acute pharyngitis in patients 15 years of age and older. Patients treated with intramuscular or oral dexamethasone had significant relief of pain (relative to baseline) compared with patients who were given placebo. Identification of a bacterial pathogen had a significant impact on the response to dexamethasone.

P53 and Ki-67 as outcome predictors for advanced squamous cell cancers of the head and neck treated with chemoradiotherapy.
P53 and Ki-67 status will predict response to treatment, organ preservation, and survival in patients with advanced squamous cell cancers of the head and neck treated with chemoradiotherapy (CRT). ⋯ P53 and Ki-67 status appear to be related to the various survival end points considered in this study. However, this relation does not seem to be sufficient to warrant treatment modifications. Closer follow-up may be justified in both p53+ and Ki67+ patients to detect recurrence or a second primary at an earlier stage, possibly improving survival.

Improved postoperative pain control in pediatric adenotonsillectomy with dextromethorphan.
A prospective, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled protocol. ⋯ Dextromethorphan syrup is a safe, non-narcotic medication that significantly reduced the requirement of intravenous morphine after pediatric adenotonsillectomy. Its routine use in this manner is recommended.

Use of dexamethasone on the prophylaxis of nausea and vomiting after tympanomastoid surgery.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the prophylactic effect of dexamethasone on postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) in patients undergoing tympanomastoid surgery. ⋯ Dexamethasone at a dosage of 10 mg administered intravenously is effective in preventing PONV in patients undergoing tympanomastoid surgery.

Hyperthermic, supersaturated humidification in the treatment of xerostomia.
To investigate the role of hyperthermic, supersaturated humidification in the treatment of radiation-induced xerostomia. ⋯ The Vapotherm MT-3000 device appears to provide minimal or no additional relief from radiation xerostomia over standard bedside humidifiers. Further investigation may be warranted with newer models of the device and with disorders of mucociliary clearance.
