To assess treatment patterns in adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and associated healthcare costs in a real-world US setting. ⋯ Treatment changes were commonly observed and were associated with excess healthcare cost, emphasizing the unmet treatment needs of adults with ADHD in the US.

Patients' perspectives on patient safety have rarely been incorporated into quality initiatives in primary care. Our objective was to understand the patient perspective on patient safety in patient-centered medical homes (PCMHs). We conducted 12 patient focus groups/interviews in nine sites with 65 patients at a geographically diverse sample of National Committee on Quality Assurance Level 3 recognized PCMHs across three states. ⋯ Other themes important to specific patient safety domains included sharing of and access to information, patient education and patient-centered medication reconciliation process, clear documentation for the diagnostic process, patient-centered comprehensive visits, and timeliness of care. Communication and trust are key to patient perceptions of safe primary care. Focusing on these themes across safety domains may help to make primary care both more patient-centered and safer, and should be considered in future ambulatory safety initiatives.

Hemoglobin A1C testing frequency among patients with type 2 diabetes within a US payer system: a retrospective observational study.
The American Diabetes Association (ADA) guidelines recommend A1C testing schedules for patients with type 2 diabetes; however, level of real-world guideline adherence remains unclear. The current study evaluated A1C testing frequency and its association with glycemic control and cardiovascular outcomes. ⋯ A large proportion of type 2 diabetes patients were not tested per guideline recommendations. The relationship between A1C testing frequency and glycemic control was inconsistent, though there was a significant association between more frequent testing and experiencing a CV event.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a life-long disease characterised by flare ups and periods of remission. This market research sponsored by Janssen-Cilag Ltd was designed to gain an understanding of the impact of UC from the patient's perspective and to establish the main unmet needs associated with it. ⋯ Healthcare bodies should aim to improve earlier referral to secondary care and waiting times for investigation need to be reduced significantly. Patients felt that specialists could support them in understanding their condition by discussing it with them immediately following diagnosis and by involving them in the development of their individual treatment plans. There is a need for more effective and better tolerated medications to expand the armamentarium and thus reduce the need for surgery.

To qualitatively explore the perceptions and opinions of experts dealing with systemic sclerosis (SSc) and patients with SSc on the impact of the disease and pulmonary complications on economic status, psycho-social wellbeing and the diagnostic and therapeutic journey, and to identify which strategies/interventions may be useful to address patients' and their family's needs. ⋯ SSc and pulmonary fibrosis have profound consequences on patients' and caregivers' health-related quality of life, working ability, psychological wellbeing and social interactions. Some activities may help patients and families deal with these aspects of the disease.
