Associations between hospital occupancy, intensive care unit transfer delay and hospital mortality.
Hospital occupancy (HospOcc) pressures often lead to longer intensive care unit (ICU) stay after physician recognition of discharge readiness. We evaluated the relationships between HospOcc, extended ICU stay, and patient outcomes. ⋯ ICU transfer delay exponentially increased above a threshold hospital occupancy and may be associated with increased hospital mortality.

Observational StudyEstimated plasma volume status (ePVS) could be an easy-to-use clinical tool to determine the risk of sepsis or death in patients with fever.
Capillary permeability can be increased in patients with sepsis. Indirect estimation of plasma volume status (ePVS) could identify more severely ill patients with fever. ⋯ The ePVS value was a useful additional predictive tool to assess the severity of illness in patients with fever.

Observational StudyAssociation of acyl carnitines and mortality in out-of-hospital-cardiac-arrest patients: Results of a prospective observational study.
Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is a leading cause of mortality, yet the prediction of its outcome remains challenging. Serum Acyl Carnitines (ACs), a biomarker of beta-oxidation, have been associated with cardiovascular events. We evaluated the association of different AC species with mortality and neurological outcome in a cohort of OHCA patients. ⋯ ACs are interesting surrogate biomarkers that are associated with mortality and poor neurological outcome in patients after OHCA and may help to improve the understanding of pathophysiological mechanisms and risk stratification.
