Multicenter StudyComorbidities and health status in individuals with and without COPD in five Latin American cities: the PLATINO study.
Comorbidities are common in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and have a significant impact on health status and prognosis. The PLATINO study provides data on self-reported comorbidities and perceived health status in COPD subjects. ⋯ In the PLATINO population-based study, COPD individuals had an increased number of comorbidities. Age, female gender and higher BMI were the factors associated with comorbidity in these patients. Comorbid conditions were associated with impaired health status, independently of the COPD status.

Multicenter Study Comparative Study Observational StudyUnderdiagnosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in women: quantification of the problem, determinants and proposed actions.
The distribution of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in women, and its underdiagnosis and determinants in the general population, have not been well described. The EPI-SCAN study is an epidemiologic, observational study conducted at 11 Spanish centers on the general population aged 40 to 80. ⋯ There is a greater underdiagnosis of COPD in women than in men in Spain.

Multicenter StudyHealth-related quality of life in a national cohort of patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension or chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension.
Patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) experience impaired health-related quality of life (HRQL). The objective of this study was to evaluate HRQL in a nation-wide sample. ⋯ HRQL is impaired in this population, especially in PAH/CTEPH patients near death. HRQL measurements could help predict the prognosis in PAH and CTPH and provide additional information in these patients.

Multicenter Study Clinical TrialVideo-assisted thoracoscopic lung biopsy in the diagnosis of interstitial lung disease: a prospective, multi-center study in 224 patients.
To evaluate whether the location and number of lung biopsies obtained by video-assisted thoracoscopy (VAT) influence the diagnosis of diffuse interstitial lung disease (ILD). To assess the applicability of an Ambulatory Surgery Program (ASP). ⋯ Anatomical location and number of lung biopsy specimens did not seem to influence the diagnosis. The patients included in an ASP had a complication rate comparable to that of the hospitalized, so this procedure can be included in a surgical outpatient program. Lung biopsy obtained by VAT is a powerful and safe tool for diagnosis of suspected ILD, resulting in a definitive diagnosis for the majority of patients with a low morbidity rate.

Multicenter StudyReliability and validity of a short version of the STAI anxiety measurement scale in respiratory patients.
There is comorbidity between respiratory disease and anxiety. In order to measure the anxiety of hospitalized patients it is necessary to use reliable and valid, and preferably short questionnaires. ⋯ The short version of the state subscale of the STAI has showed good metric properties in hospitalized respiratory patients.
