The effect of recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEPO) on neuropathic pain remains unclear. This study aimed to determine the effects of preemptive administration of rhEPO on the behavioural changes and neuroinflammatory responses in a rat model of neuropathic pain. ⋯ Preemptive rhEPO dose-dependently attenuated the mechanical and thermal hyperalgesia in L5 spinal nerve transection rats, which correlated with the decreased cerebral expressions of TNF-alpha, IL-1beta, and IL-6 via downregulating NF-kappaB activity and the increased expression of IL-10.

Bilateral infraorbital nerve blocks decrease postoperative pain but do not reduce time to discharge following outpatient nasal surgery.
While infraorbital nerve blocks have demonstrated analgesic benefits for pediatric nasal and facial plastic surgery, no studies to date have explored the effect of this regional anesthetic technique on adult postoperative recovery. We designed this study to test the hypothesis that infraorbital nerve blocks combined with a standardized general anesthetic decrease the duration of recovery following outpatient nasal surgery. ⋯ When added to a standardized general anesthetic, bilateral IOB do not decrease actual time to discharge following outpatient nasal surgery despite a beneficial effect on postoperative pain.

Telemedicine in the management of chronic pain: a cost analysis study.
Telemedicine provides patients with easy and remote access to consultant expertise irrespective of geographic location. In a randomized controlled trial, this study has applied a rigorous costing methodology to the use of telemedicine in chronic pain management. ⋯ Telemedicine is cost-effective over a broad range of assumptions, including annual patient volumes, travel distance, fuel costs, amortization, and discount rates. This study provides data from a real-world setting to determine relevant thresholds and targets for establishing a TM program for patients who are undergoing chronic pain therapy.
