Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with chronic non-specific musculoskeletal pain syndromes; however, studies are lacking with respect to its relationship with postoperative pain. We tested the hypothesis that a lower preoperative vitamin D level is associated with increased postoperative pain and/or opioid consumption in morbidly obese patients who had laparoscopic bariatric surgery. ⋯ We did not find any association between preoperative vitamin D levels and postoperative pain scores/opioid consumption in morbidly obese patients undergoing bariatric surgery.

This study aimed to identify the incidence and risk factors for acute kidney injury (AKI) after liver resection surgery and to clarify the relationship between postoperative AKI and outcome. ⋯ Perioperative risk factors for AKI after liver resection surgery are similar to those established for other surgical procedures. Further studies are needed to establish causality and to determine whether interventions on modifiable risk factors can reduce the incidence of postoperative AKI and improve patient outcome. This study was registered at the University Hospital Medical Information Network (UMIN) Center (UMIN 000008089).
