Pregabalin and lamotrigine in central poststroke pain: A pilot study.
Comparative study of Class I drugs in central poststroke pain (CPSP) is lacking. ⋯ Both pregabalin and lamotrigine are equally effective in CPSP, but significant side effects leading to drug withdrawal occured with lamotrigine administration.

Effect of intraoperative brain protection with propofol on postoperative cognition in patients undergoing temporary clipping during intracranial aneurysm surgery.
Cognitive dysfunction after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) has been attributable to presence of subarachnoid blood, hydrocephalus (HCP), cerebral edema, vasospasm, and temporary clipping of intracranial aneurysm. Provision of neuroprotection during temporary clipping may improve postoperative cognition in such patients. ⋯ Pharmacologic neuroprotection with propofol at the time of temporary clipping during surgery for aneurysmal SAH did not offer any advantage as far as preservation of cognition is concerned.

A comparative evaluation of nitrous oxide-isoflurane vs isoflurane anesthesia in patients undergoing craniotomy for supratentorial tumors: A preliminary study.
Neuroanesthesiologists are a highly biased group; so far the use of nitrous oxide in their patient population is concerned. We hypothesized that any adverse consequence with use of nitrous oxide should affect the patient so as to prolong his/her stay in the hospital. The primary aim of this preliminary trial was to evaluate if avoidance of nitrous oxide could decrease the duration of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and hospital stay after elective surgery for supratentorial tumors. ⋯ From this preliminary study with a low statistical power, it appears that avoidance of nitrous oxide in one's practice may not affect the outcome in the neurosurgical patients. Further large systemic trials are needed to address this issue.

Comparison of the analgesic effect of ibuprofen with mesalamine after discectomy surgery in patients with lumbar disc herniation: a double-blind randomized controlled trial.
Pain management is an important component in the postoperative period following discectomy. ⋯ Since both drugs showed almost equal analgesic effect, considering its safety profile mesalamine, seems to be the preferred choice to alleviate post-discectomy surgery pain.

Hemodynamic response to skull pins application in children: effect of lignocaine infiltration of scalp.
Skull pins application following local anesthetic infiltration of scalp obtunds hemodynamic changes in adults. No such study is available in children. ⋯ In children, skull pins placement 1 min. after scalp infiltration with 0.5% lignocaine plain fails to prevent the hemodynamic changes arising during pins placement (peak change) and up to 1 min. after pins placement. However, the technique successfully blocks these changes beyond 1 min. post skull pins fixation.
