Experience of diffusion tensor imaging and 1H spectroscopy for outcome prediction in severe traumatic brain injury: Preliminary results.
The objective of the study is to test whether multimodal magnetic resonance imaging can provide a reliable outcome prediction of the clinical status, focusing on consciousness at 1 year after severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). ⋯ FA and NAA/Cr hold potential as quantitative outcome-prediction tools at the subacute phase of TBI.

Pentastarch 10% (250 kDa/0.45) is an independent risk factor of acute kidney injury following cardiac surgery.
OBJECTIVE, DESIGN AND PATIENTS: The risk of acute kidney injury (AKI) associated with hydroxyethyl starch may be limited to higher molecular weight agents. We retrospectively evaluated the risk of AKI using pentastarch 10% (250 kDa, 0.45) in a random cohort of 563 patients operated for a cardiac surgery at a university hospital. ⋯ This study identified a dose-dependent risk of AKI with pentastarch following cardiac surgery, given until the end of the first postoperative day.

Apocynin attenuates diaphragm oxidative stress and protease activation during prolonged mechanical ventilation.
To investigate whether apocynin protects the diaphragm from wasting and oxidative stress during mechanical ventilation (MV). ⋯ Our results suggest that the protective effects of apocynin on the diaphragm during prolonged MV seem to be linked to both its functions as an antioxidant and role in cellular signaling regulating the cysteine protease inhibitor calpastatin.

Iloprost preserves renal oxygenation and restores kidney function in endotoxemia-related acute renal failure in the rat.
To investigate that exogenous prostacyclin would counterbalance an endotoxemia-induced intrarenal vasoconstriction and would therefore have beneficial effects on kidney function. ⋯ Iloprost significantly restored kidney function of endotoxemic rats to baseline values. This beneficial effect of iloprost on renal function might be addressed to an improvement in intrarenal oxygenation.
