Meta AnalysisEffect of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation in Patients With Critical Illness: An Updated Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.
Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is used in the rehabilitation of patients with critical illness. However, it is unclear whether NMES prevents ICU-acquired weakness (ICU-AW). For this purpose, we conducted an updated systematic review and meta-analysis. ⋯ This updated meta-analysis revealed that the use of NMES may result in a lower occurrence of ICU-AW in patients with critical illness, but its use may have little to no effect on pricking sensation in patients.

Meta AnalysisDead-Space Ventilation Indices and Mortality in Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is associated with high ventilation-perfusion heterogeneity and dead-space ventilation. However, whether the degree of dead-space ventilation is associated with outcomes is uncertain. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we evaluated the ability of dead-space ventilation measures to predict mortality in patients with ARDS. ⋯ Dead-space ventilation indices were independently associated with mortality in adults with ARDS. These indices could be incorporated into clinical trials and used to identify patients who could benefit from early institution of adjunctive therapies. The cut-offs identified in this study should be prospectively validated.

Meta AnalysisThe Efficacy of Glutamine Supplementation in Severe Adult Burn Patients: A Systematic Review With Trial Sequential Meta-Analysis.
Evidence supporting glutamine supplementation in severe adult burn patients has created a state of uncertainty due to the variability in the treatment effect reported across small and large randomized controlled trials (RCTs). We aimed to systematically review the effect of glutamine supplementation on mortality in severe adult burn patients. ⋯ Glutamine supplementation, regardless of administration, does not appear to improve clinical outcomes in severely adult burned patients.

Meta AnalysisPredictors of Noninvasive Ventilation Failure in the Post-Extubation Period: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
To identify factors associated with failure of noninvasive ventilation (NIV) in the post-extubation period. ⋯ We identified several prognostic factors before and 1 hour after NIV initiation associated with increased risk of NIV failure in the post-extubation period. Well-designed prospective studies are required to confirm the prognostic importance of these factors to help further guide clinical decision-making.
