Incidence and Risk Factors of Gastrointestinal and Hepatobiliary Complications after Spinal Fusion Surgery: a Retrospective Cohort Study.
Spinal surgery holds a higher chance of unpredicted postoperative medical complications among orthopedic surgeries. Several studies have analyzed the risk factors for diverse postoperative medical complications, but the majority investigated incidences of each complication qualitatively. Among gastrointestinal complications, reports regarding postoperative ileus were relatively frequent. However, risk factors or incidences of hepatobiliary complications have yet to be investigated. The purpose of this study was to examine the incidence of gastrointestinal complications after spinal surgery, quantitatively analyze the risk factors of frequent complications, and to determine cues requiring early approaches. ⋯ Patients on postoperative care after spinal surgery should receive direct attention as soon as possible after manifesting abdominal symptoms. Laboratory and radiologic results must be carefully reviewed, and early consultation to gastroenterologists or general surgeons is recommended to avoid preventable complications.

Randomized Controlled TrialEffects of Intraoperative Ventilation Strategy on Perioperative Atelectasis Assessed by Lung Ultrasonography in Patients Undergoing Open Abdominal Surgery: a Prospective Randomized Controlled Study.
Protective mechanical ventilation using low tidal volume has been introduced to surgical patients to reduce the incidence of postoperative pulmonary complications. We investigated the effects of protective ventilation (PV) techniques on anesthesia-induced atelectasis identified via lung ultrasonography in patients undergoing abdominal surgery. ⋯ Ventilation with low tidal volume combined with 5 cmH₂O PEEP did not cause further loss of aeration compared to ventilation with high tidal volume. Low tidal volume ventilation can be used in patients without lung injury based on lung assessment by bedside lung ultrasonography.

National Trends in the Treatment of Ruptured Cerebral Aneurysms in Korea Using an Age-adjusted Method.
Two primary treatment methods are used for ruptured cerebral aneurysms, surgical clipping and endovascular coiling. In recent decades, endovascular coiling has shown remarkable progress compared to surgical clipping, along with technological developments. The aim of this study was to investigate the recent trends in treatments for ruptured cerebral aneurysms in Korea. ⋯ There was a significant increase in the proportion of patients with ruptured aneurysms undergoing endovascular coiling between 2010 and 2017, whereas the use of surgical clipping decreased. The endovascular coiling was significantly increased in all age groups and surgical clipping was decreased in all age groups, especially in patients under 50 years of age.

The Experience of Providing Older Adult Patients with Transitional Care from an Acute Care Hospital to Home in Cooperation with a Public Health Center.
This study aimed to describe the experience of providing older adult patients with transitional care from an acute care hospital to home in cooperation with a public health center, in order to present the barriers to that care and suggest better organizational methods. ⋯ Through our experience of providing transitional care from an acute care hospital to home in cooperation with a public health center, we expect that the transitional care suitable for the Korean medical situation could be established and successful.

The Implication of Cardiac Injury Score on In-hospital Mortality of Coronavirus Disease 2019.
The severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has spread worldwide. Cardiac injury after SARS-CoV-2 infection is a major concern. The present study investigated impact of the biomarkers indicating cardiac injury in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on patients' outcomes. ⋯ The increased number of cardiac injury markers is related to in-hospital mortality in patients with COVID-19.
