Impact of Lactate Dehydrogenase and Hemoglobin Levels on Clinical Outcomes in Patients With Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria: Results From the National Korean PNH Registry.
Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) is a rare hematologic disorder caused by uncontrolled terminal complement activation, which leads to intravascular hemolysis (IVH), thromboembolism (TE), renal failure, and premature mortality. ⋯ In complement inhibitor-naïve patients with PNH, LDH ≥ 1.5 × ULN was a significant predictor of TE, and TE was a significant predictor of death. Hb was not a significant predictor of TE, impaired renal function, or death. Therefore, controlling IVH will improve clinical outcomes for patients with PNH.

Mildly Reduced Renal Function Is Associated With Increased Heart Failure Admissions in Patients With Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy.
The association between renal dysfunction and cardiovascular outcomes has yet to be determined in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). We aimed to investigate whether mildly reduced renal function is associated with the prognosis in patients with HCM. ⋯ This real-world observation showed that even mildly reduced renal function (i.e., eGFR 60-89 mL/min/1.73 m²) in patients with HCM was associated with an increased risk of MACEs, especially for HHF.

Risk of Cerebral Aneurysm Rupture After Liver Transplantation: Development and Validation of a Hemorrhagic Stroke Scoring Model.
Liver transplantation (LT) patients appear to be more prone to neurological events compared to individuals undergoing other types of solid-organ transplantation. The aims of the present study were to analyze the prevalence of unruptured intracranial aneurysms (UIAs) in patients undergoing liver transplantation (LT) and to examine the perioperative occurrence of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Also, it intended to systematically identify the risk factors of SAH and hemorrhagic stroke (HS) within a year after LT and to develop a scoring system which involves distinct clinical features of LT patients. ⋯ The incidence of UIA and SAH was very low in LT patients. A poor admission mental status, diagnosis of UIA, serum ammonia levels, and MELD scores were significantly associated with the risk of HS within one year after LT. Our scoring system showed a good discrimination to predict the HS in LT patients.

Association Between Multiple Heavy Metal Exposures and Cholesterol Levels in Residents Living Near a Smelter Plant in Korea.
Considering the interactions between heavy metals, a comprehensive evaluation of the effects of exposure to various types of co-interacting heavy metals on health is required. This study assessed the association between dyslipidemia markers and blood mercury, lead, cadmium, iron, zinc, and nickel levels in residents of an abandoned refinery plant. ⋯ These results suggest that the cholesterol levels of residents around the Janghang refinery plant may be elevated owing to exposure to multiple heavy metals.

Trends in Incidence and Drug Prescriptions for Croup in Children Under 5 Years of Age: A 2002-2019 Population-Based Study.
Tracking national croup trends can provide important insights for childhood health management. This study aimed to analyze the incidence and drug prescription trends in Korean children over a two-decade period. ⋯ Over the past two decades, croup incidence has risen, accompanied by increased epinephrine use and decreased antibiotic prescriptions. Longer hospitalization and higher medication use were mainly observed in primary care facilities.
