Short- and long-term outcomes after incident pneumonia in adults with chronic kidney disease: a time-dependent analysis from the Stockholm CREAtinine Measurement project.
Little is known about the health sequelae of pneumonia in persons with chronic kidney disease (CKD). ⋯ Incident pneumonia was associated with increased risks of MACE, CKD progression, severe UTI/sepsis and death, with risks highest soon after pneumonia diagnosis but extending beyond 90 days. Our findings highlight the susceptibility for adverse outcomes of CKD patients following pneumonia diagnosis, and may inform clinical decisions regarding vaccination strategies.

COVID-19-related mortality in kidney transplant and dialysis patients: results of the ERACODA collaboration.
Patients on kidney replacement therapy comprise a vulnerable population and may be at increased risk of death from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Currently, only limited data are available on outcomes in this patient population. ⋯ The 28-day case-fatality rate is high in patients on kidney replacement therapy with COVID-19 and is primarily driven by the risk factors age and frailty. Furthermore, in the first year after kidney transplantation, patients may be at increased risk of COVID-19-related mortality as compared with dialysis patients on the waiting list for transplantation. This information is important in guiding clinical decision-making, and for informing the public and healthcare authorities on the COVID-19-related mortality risk in kidney transplant and dialysis patients.

Randomized Controlled TrialThe dapagliflozin and prevention of adverse outcomes in chronic kidney disease (DAPA-CKD) trial: baseline characteristics.
The Dapagliflozin and Prevention of Adverse outcomes in Chronic Kidney Disease (DAPA-CKD; NCT03036150) trial was designed to assess the effect of the sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor dapagliflozin on kidney and cardiovascular events in participants with CKD with and without type 2 diabetes (T2D). This analysis reports the baseline characteristics of those recruited, comparing them with those enrolled in other trials. ⋯ Participants with a wide range of underlying kidney diseases receiving renin-angiotensin system blocking therapy have been enrolled in the DAPA-CKD trial. The trial will examine the efficacy and safety of dapagliflozin in participants with CKD Stages 2-4 and increased albuminuria, with and without T2D.

Incidence of fractures in middle-aged individuals with early chronic kidney disease: a population-based analysis of CARTaGENE.
Previous studies evaluating fractures in chronic kidney disease (CKD) have mostly focused on hip or major fractures in aged populations with moderate to advanced CKD. We aimed at evaluating the association between early CKD and fracture incidence at all sites across age and sex in middle-aged individuals. ⋯ Even early CKD increases fracture incidence, especially in younger individuals and in men.

Increased mortality risk associated with serum sodium variations and borderline hypo- and hypernatremia in hospitalized adults.
This study aimed to evaluate short-term and long-term mortalities in a cohort of unselected hospitalized patients with serum sodium concentration ([Na+]) variations within and outside of reference range. ⋯ In hospitalized adults, [Na+] fluctuation (≥6 mEq/L) irrespective of admission [Na+] and borderline hypo- or hypernatremia are independent predictors of progressively increasing short- and long-term mortality burdens.
