To conduct a systematic review comparing the effect of three interventions (prophylactic antibiotics, tympanostomy tube insertion and adenoidectomy) on otitis media recurrence, recurrence frequency and total recurrence time. ⋯ Prophylactic antibiotics are effective in reducing otitis media recurrence, recurrence frequency and total recurrence time. Tympanostomy tube insertion failed to reduce the prevalence of otitis media recurrence, but reduced the recurrence frequency and total recurrence time. Adenoidectomy reduced otitis media recurrence; results on otitis media recurrence frequency differed but on average there was a reduction; however, the two studies with relevant data on total recurrence time had contradictory results.

Multiple symmetrical lipomatosis: case report and literature review.
To discuss the pathophysiology and various treatment methods of multiple symmetrical lipomatosis. ⋯ Surgical excision and liposuction are complementary treatments in the management of multiple symmetrical lipomatosis. Patients should be aware of the limitations of both surgical options, and the risk of lipoma recurrence, before surgery. The decision on the mode of surgery relies upon the disease extent, the patient's expectations and the surgeon's experience.

We present the first report of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Propionibacterium acnes parotid abscesses complicated by facial nerve palsy. Facial nerve palsy secondary to parotid gland abscess is rare, with only eight previously reported cases. ⋯ Parotid gland abscess can lead to facial paralysis. Both methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Propionibacterium acnes may be involved. Ultrasonography or computed tomography is recommended to exclude a parotid abscess in patients presenting with suppurative parotitis.

The making of a career: Joseph Toynbee's first steps in otology.
Joseph Toynbee (1815-1866) is considered one of the fathers of modern otology. He spent his whole life in London, studying and describing the anatomy and pathology of the main diseases of the ear. ⋯ Frustrated by the weakened state of aural surgery in Britain, and by the popularity of several 'quacks aurists' (including John Harrison Curtis, William Wright and Alexander Turnbull), Toynbee insisted that the study of the ear needed to distance itself from quackery and rebuild itself upon a scientific foundation. This paper evaluates several exchanges between Toynbee and Curtis, Wright and Turnbull.

Although malignant (necrotising) otitis externa is not a common diagnosis, there have been a number of recently reported cases with pathogens other than Pseudomonas aeruginosa as the causative organism. In addition, there are many published reports of resistance to antibiotics in cases of malignant otitis externa caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This review aims to assess the cases reported and to clarify the current opinion on the diagnostic criteria and management of such cases.
