Large international differences in colorectal cancer survival exist, even between countries with similar healthcare. We investigate the extent to which stage at diagnosis explains these differences. ⋯ Differences in stage at diagnosis partly explain international differences in colorectal cancer survival, with a more adverse stage distribution contributing to comparatively low survival in Denmark. Differences in stage distribution could arise because of differences in diagnostic delay and awareness of symptoms, or in the thoroughness of staging procedures. Nevertheless, survival differences also exist for each stage of disease, suggesting unequal access to optimal treatment, particularly in the UK.

Since the impact of fractionation in SBRT has not been systematically investigated, this modelling study was performed to see how the therapeutic window is affected for a range of fractions at target doses commonly administered in SBRT. ⋯ The USC model generally predicts a larger therapeutic window than the LQ model for an increasing number of fractions than today's practice in SBRT.

Since May 2001, imatinib mesylate has become the first-line therapy for chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) but the survival pattern by age, sex, and ethnicity is not clear. ⋯ The relative survival rates of CML patients have improved in the post-imatinib era. However, the improvement in survival rates has been modest in this population-based data compared to those reported from randomized trials. Improvement in survival among older patients is lower than in younger patients. Young (<50 years) AA women with CML had lower relative survival rates compared to young Caucasian women in the post-imatinib era.

Chemoradiotherapy is an effective treatment for anal cancer, yet from follow-up many survivors seem to suffer from late effects. Data of long-term health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in anal cancer survivors are limited, and there is a growing interest in cancer survivorship. ⋯ Survivors after chemoradiotherapy for anal cancer have significant long-term impairment of HRQOL. Reduced social, role and sexual function, and increased diarrhoea, incontinence for gas and stools, and buttock pain were commonly reported. Increased awareness of this may lead to better management of late effects and better care for cancer survivors.

Gadolinium diethylene-triamine penta-acetic acid (Gd-DTPA)-based dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) has been suggested to be a useful non-invasive method for providing biomarkers for personalized cancer treatment. In this preclinical study, we investigated whether Gd-DTPA-based DCE-MRI may have the potential to differentiate between poorly and highly metastatic tumors. ⋯ This study supports the clinical attempts to establish DCE-MRI as a method for providing biomarkers for tumor aggressiveness and suggests that tumors showing low K(trans) and low ve values may have high probability of lymphogenous metastatic dissemination.
