Multicenter StudyOff-pump surgery in preventing perioperative stroke after coronary artery bypass grafting: a retrospective multicentre study.
To determine the effect of the off-pump technique in preventing stroke development during the early perioperative period after coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG). ⋯ Off-pump surgery has a lower perioperative stroke incidence than on-pump only in cases associated with cardiovascular stroke-risk factors, in particular, with chronic renal failure and preoperative cardiac failure, but also with peripheral arteriopathy, prior stroke and non-elective surgery. The perioperative stroke rate remains high in cases with two or more preoperative stroke risk factors, even when using the off-pump technique, particularly when chronic renal failure is present.

Multicenter StudyAntiplatelet therapy at the time of coronary artery bypass grafting: a multicentre cohort study.
The purpose of this multicentre cohort study was to examine the relationship between antiplatelet therapy (APT) at the time of coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and postoperative bleeding complications, transfusion requirements and adverse cardiovascular events. ⋯ Preoperative APT is associated with increased bleeding and greater transfusion requirements after CABG. Clopidogrel exposure is associated with greater reoperation rates and is an independent risk factor for severe postoperative bleeding.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyOptimized temporary bi-ventricular pacing improves haemodynamic function after on-pump cardiac surgery in patients with severe left ventricular systolic dysfunction: a two-centre randomized control trial.
Optimized temporary bi-ventricular (BiV) pacing may benefit heart failure patients after on-pump cardiac surgery compared with conventional dual-chamber right ventricular (RV) pacing. An improvement in haemodynamic function with BiV pacing may reduce the duration of 'Level 3' intensive care. ⋯ Postoperative haemodynamic function may be enhanced by temporary BiV pacing of high-risk patients after on-pump cardiac surgery.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative StudyComplications following lung surgery in the Dutch-Belgian randomized lung cancer screening trial.
To assess the complication rate in participants of the screen arm of the NELSON lung cancer screening trial who underwent surgical resection and to investigate, based on a literature review, whether the complication rate, length of hospital stay, re-thoracotomy and mortality rates after a surgical procedure were different from those of the non-screening series, taking co-morbidity into account. ⋯ In conclusion, mortality rates after surgical procedures are lower in the NELSON lung cancer screening trial than those in the non-screening series. The rate of complications is within the same range as in the non-screening series.

Multicenter StudyAntegrade selective cerebral perfusion and moderate hypothermia in aortic arch surgery: clinical outcomes in elderly patients.
To evaluate the outcome in elderly patients (≥ 75 years) undergoing elective aortic arch surgery with the aid of selective antegrade cerebral perfusion (SACP) and moderate hypothermic circulatory arrest (HCA). ⋯ Summarizing, elective aortic arch surgery in elderly patients using SACP and moderate HCA provides excellent results regarding mortality and postoperative neurological outcome. Prolonged HCA time and femoral cannulation were the only predictors of serious adverse events (mortality, neurological injury).
