Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyIncidence of post-thoracotomy pain: a comparison between total intravenous anaesthesia and inhalation anaesthesia.
Thoracotomy is one of the most painful surgical incisions. Little is known, however, about the effect of type of anaesthesia on chronic post-thoracotomy pain syndrome (CPTS). We therefore compared the incidence of CPTS after total intravenous anaesthesia (TIVA) and inhalation anaesthesia. ⋯ TIVA with propofol and remifentanil may reduce the incidence of CPTS at 3 and 6 months.

Randomized Controlled TrialControl of post-thoracotomy pain by transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation: effect on serum cytokine levels, visual analogue scale, pulmonary function and medication.
Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) has been used to control post-thoracotomy pain with contrasting results. We aimed to assess the efficacy of TENS on post-thoracotomy pain in relation of four criterion measurements as: (i) cytokines; (ii) pain; (iii) respiratory function and (iv) intake of narcotic medication. ⋯ TENS is a valuable strategy to alleviate post-thoracotomy pain with reduction of cytokine production and of analgesic consumption, and with positive effects on pulmonary ventilation function.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyIncidence, predictors and outcomes of incomplete revascularization after percutaneous coronary intervention and coronary artery bypass grafting: a subgroup analysis of 3-year SYNTAX data.
To assess whether incomplete revascularization by percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) or coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) has an effect on long-term outcomes. ⋯ Despite the hypothesis-generating nature of this data, this study demonstrates that incomplete revascularization is associated with adverse events during follow-up after PCI but not CABG.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyRandomized comparison between mild and moderate hypothermic cardiopulmonary bypass for neonatal arterial switch operation.
To compare neonates receiving arterial switch operation (ASO) either with mild or moderate hypothermic cardiopulmonary bypass. ⋯ The ASO under mild hypothermia seemed to be beneficial for pulmonary recovery, need for inotropic support and length of ICU and hospital stay. No worse early- or intermediate-term effects of mild hypothermia were found.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyComparison between intermittent intravenous analgesia and intermittent paravertebral subpleural analgesia for pain relief after thoracotomy.
In the present prospective double-blind randomized trial, the effects of intermittent paravertebral subpleural bupivacaine and morphine on pain management in patients undergoing thoracotomy were evaluated and compared with intermittent systemic analgesia. ⋯ The patients undergoing lung resection through a thoracotomy were observed with reduced postoperative pain and better surgical outcomes with respect to the length of hospital stay, postoperative forced expiratory volume in the first second, pulmonary complications, and need for bronchoscopic management, when paravertebral subpleural analgesia was induced by morphine.
