Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialRandomized double-blind comparison of lidocaine gel and plain lubricating gel in relieving pain during flexible cystoscopy.
To compare the pain induced by outpatient flexible cystoscopy in men having local lidocaine jelly application or plain lubricant. ⋯ Using plain lubricant is cheaper and faster than applying lidocaine gel. The pain score, pain grade, postcystoscopic analgesic requirement, and anesthetics requested for the next cystoscopy were similar in the two groups. However, a larger investigation will be needed to achieve more significant statistical power.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical TrialTransurethral electrovaporization of the prostate: is it any better than standard transurethral prostatectomy? 5-year follow-up.
At present, transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is regarded as the most effective treatment for benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). In the present randomized study, we compared TURP with transurethral electrovaporization of the prostate (TUVP). ⋯ The TUVP procedure is as effective as TURP with similar morbidity. The advantages of TUVP are that the urethral catheter is withdrawn earlier, hospitalization is shorter, and bleeding is less. Its disadvantage is that tissue cannot be sampled for histologic diagnosis. In our opinion, in order to exploit the advantages of this technique, TUVP should be preferred in elderly patients without any suspicion of prostate cancer for whom bleeding during operation is a source of risk.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialEffect of single-dose subarachnoid spinal anesthesia on pain and recovery after unilateral percutaneous nephrolithotomy.
We studied the impact of one dose of subarachnoid spinal analgesia on postoperative pain and recovery after percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). ⋯ A single preoperative dose of subarachnoid spinal analgesia provides a statistically significant decrease in postoperative parenteral pain medication and earlier ambulation. It also appears to reduce the amount of postoperative pain and decrease nausea.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialEffect of potassium citrate therapy on stone recurrence and residual fragments after shockwave lithotripsy in lower caliceal calcium oxalate urolithiasis: a randomized controlled trial.
To evaluate the efficacy of potassium citrate treatment in preventing stone recurrences and residual fragments after shockwave lithotripsy (SWL) for lower pole calcium oxalate urolithiasis. ⋯ Potassium citrate therapy significantly alleviated calcium oxalate stone activity after SWL for lower pole stones in patients who were stone free. An important observation was the beneficial effect of medical treatment on stone activity after SWL among patients with residual calculi.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialFlexible cystoscopy: is the volume and content of the urethral gel critical?
To determine whether volume (10 or 20mL) or the presence of 2% lidocaine (lignocaine) in the gel used for urethral lubrication alters the discomfort felt during flexible cystoscopy. ⋯ The least pain on cystoscopy occurred in patients receiving 20 mL of gel containing lidocaine.
