The rise of evidence-based anatomy has emphasized the need for original anatomical studies with high clarity, transparency, and comprehensiveness in reporting. Currently, inconsistencies in the quality and reporting of such studies have placed limits on accurate reliability and impact assessment. Our aim was to develop a checklist of reporting items that should be addressed by authors of original anatomical studies. ⋯ The steering committee hopes the AQUA Checklist will improve the quality and reporting of anatomical studies. The classical recommendation for paramedian approaches is needle insertion 1-2 cm paramedian and an angle of 10°-15° medial-cephalad to the plane of the back, but contact with vertebrae is frequent. A mathematical approach to individualizing punctures is proposed on the basis of skin-dural sac distance (d): Optimal angle ∼ inverse cosine [d/ √(1+d^2) ] and the distance covered by the needle ∼ √(1+d^2) for 1 cm paramedian punctures. The inferred angles were compared to optimal angles leading to the central dorsal part of the dural sac from 1 to 2 cm paramedian, measured by Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in seven cases and in a short stature volunteer (1.58 m, Body Mass Index (BMI) 23.2), to study supine and fetal positions using both closed MR and ultrasound. ⋯ The classically recommended angles of 10°-15° differ from the optimal angles, particularly in small patients, suggesting the need for ultrasound guidance or for inferring angles prior to spinal anesthesia. Cricothyroidotomy is a surgical procedure involving penetration through the skin and cricothyroid membrane to maintain airway patency during life-threatening emergency conditions. Complications such as bleeding and laryngeal stenosis can result from it. Our aim in this study was to identify the anatomical structures located on the membrane and to ascertain whether there is a safe area on the membrane for this procedure. ⋯ Needle puncture or cannulation through the lower right quadrant of the cricothyroid membrane will injure fewer anatomical structures so there should be fewer complications due to degradation of the vascular supply to this region. An unwritten anatomy lesson: The influence of Roman clothing on neuroanatomical terminology: In memoriam Albert L. Rhoton, Jr. (1932-2016).
Throughout the centuries, anatomists attempting to denominate the new structures they discovered have found inspiration in the civilization of ancient Rome and the clothing worn by its citizens. This aricle presents the origins of seven neuroanatomical terms, fimbria, velum, funiculus, lemniscus, corona, splenium, and cingulum, inspired by the clothing and jewellery of Roman women and the military attire of Roman soldiers. ⋯ Clin. Body Worlds is an anatomical exhibition that shows human remains to the public. It has been considered controversial since it raises ethical tensions and issues. However, organizers and supporters of Body Worlds have claimed the exhibition is intended to promote visitors' understanding over the human body. ⋯ Average scores achieved on the quiz by the postvisit sample (X¯= 9.08, s = 2.48, n = 164) were significantly higher (unpaired t = 3.3957, P = 0.0008) than those achieved by the previsit sample (X¯= 8.11, s = 2.69, n = 167). Our results suggest that a visit to Body Worlds' event Facets of Life may have a beneficial effect in anatomical knowledge. However, further studies with better empirical designs and fewer limitations are needed to confirm our results.
