Observational Study
Frequency of inadequate neuromuscular blockade during general anesthesia.
We used electronic health record data to define frequency of inadequate intraoperative neuromuscular blockade (NMB). ⋯ Nearly 1% of all general anesthetic procedures involving NMB exhibit inadequate relaxation resulting in procedural interruption. These data suggest that current use of neuromuscular blocking drugs and NMB monitoring expose patients to inadequate blockade. The risk of this phenomenon warrants further study.

Comparison of laryngeal mask airway vs tracheal intubation: a systematic review on airway complications.
To determine whether the laryngeal mask airway (LMA) has advantages over the tracheal tube (TT) in terms of incidence of cough, sore throat, laryngospasm, dysphagia, dysphonia, and blood staining. This is a systematic literature review performed at the Universtity Medical Center of Utrecht. The online databases PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library were searched for relevant randomized controlled trials. ⋯ Overall, no clear advantage of the LMA over the TT was found but the LMA Supreme was related to the lowest incidence of airway complications. In this review, no clear difference in incidence of postoperative airway complications could be demonstrated between LMA and TT. The LMA Supreme may reduce the incidence of airway complication in comparison to the TT but high quality randomized trials are recommended to further objectify if use of the LMA decreases the risk on postoperative airway complications.

Consequences of not relieving negative internal pressure of a medication vial: A survey and simulation study.
The glass vial of acetaminophen as an intravenous preparation (Acelio®, Terumo, Japan) has a strong internal negative pressure. The aim of our study was to determine if this negative pressure could result in medication administration errors if not released prior to connecting to the IV set. ⋯ A considerable number of anesthesiologists experienced consequences caused by the negative pressure inside the Acelio® vial. This can also cause aspiration of the contents of the syringe pump.

Visual/emotional stimuli and treatment with antidepressants alter Numerical Rating Scale score in patients with chronic pain.
To examine the impact of visual stimulation (exciting red and tranquilizing green) on the score of the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) questionnaire in patients with chronic pain. ⋯ Our findings suggest that visual/emotional stimuli and treatment with antidepressants alter the NRS score in patients with chronic pain.
