Constant positive airway pressure reduces hypoventilation induced by inhalation anesthesia.
To discover if reducing respiratory system impedance would increase tidal volume and improve ventilation during inhalation anesthesia. ⋯ We conclude that constant positive airway pressure titrated to optimal respiratory system compliance will increase efficiency of inspiratory muscles and improve ventilation. Constant positive airway pressure facilitates a pattern of breathing that minimizes some of the adverse pulmonary effects of inhalation anesthesia.

Sedation guidelines for midazolam infusion during combined spinal and epidural anesthesia.
To investigate the adequate infusion dose regimen of midazolam to induce sedation with the Ramsay score 4 with rapid onset during combined spinal and epidural anesthesia ⋯ During combined spinal and epidural anesthesia, midazolam 0.6 mg/kg/hr given until closing of the eyes (for 1.6 min) followed by midazolam 0.15 mg/kg/hr provides rapidly induced sedation, with a Ramsay score of 4 and amnesia with stable hemodynamics and respiration.

Gender may affect the hemodynamic response to induction and intubation in young adults.
To determine whether gender affects the hemodynamic response to anesthesia induction and intubation in young adults. ⋯ Pressor response is different in women than men, suggesting the difference of the response might result from the gender differences.

The effects of alfentanil or remifentanil pretreatment on propofol injection pain.
To compare the efficacy of alfentanil, remifentanil, and saline in minimizing the propofol injection pain. ⋯ The remifentanil and alfentanil groups showed significantly less frequency and severity of pain than did the saline group. Remifentanil was effective in preventing propofol injection pain, and should be used at a dose of at least 0.02 mg for this purpose. Remifentanil may be an alternative drug for prevention of propofol injection pain.

Postoperative analgesic effect of epidural neostigmine and plasma cortisol and IL-6 responses.
To examine whether epidural administration of neostigmine reduces the stress and inflammatory responses thereby improving postoperative pain status. ⋯ The preincisional epidural neostigmine transiently suppresses the stress responses during surgery and improves postoperative analgesia in patients undergoing lower open abdominal surgery.
