Ambulatory surgery is increasing, more procedures as well as more complex procedures are transferred to ambulatory surgery. Patients of all ages including elderly and more fragile are nowadays scheduled for ambulatory surgery. Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols are now developed for further facilitating readily recovery, ambulation, and discharge. Thus, to secure safety, a vigilant planning and preparedness for adverse events and emergencies is mandatory. ⋯ The present review will provide an oversight of aspects that needs to be acknowledged around planning handling of rare but serious emergencies to secure quality and safety of care in freestanding ambulatory settings.

ReviewOutpatient surgery for the inpatient: an introduction to postacute care.
This article considers how postacute care (PAC) facilities such as skilled nursing facilities, inpatient rehabilitation facilities and long-term care hospitals could represent an opportunity for outpatient surgical facilities to improve patient care. In order to understand how these facilities interact with outpatient surgical services, it is first necessary to understand the types of facilities that provide PAC. ⋯ PAC facilities are inpatient facilities focused on the rehabilitation of patients recovering from an acute illness or surgical intervention. This article seeks to provide ambulatory practitioners a fundamental understanding of PAC as a starting point for future collaborative efforts with PAC facilities; improving care for patients referred to and from PAC facilities for outpatient surgical care.

ReviewTelemedicine for preanesthesia evaluation: review of current literature and recommendations for future implementation.
The in-person preanesthesia visit serves multiple purposes including identification and optimization of comorbid conditions as well as patient education. However, it imposes a significant burden on patients and healthcare providers. In this review, we define the scope of telemedicine and present the most up-to-date literature supporting its role for the preanesthesia evaluation. The opportunities and challenges are discussed and approaches to implementation of telemedicine in preanesthesia care are offered. Finally, the future of telemedicine as it pertains to preanesthesia care is examined. ⋯ Telemedicine will continue to expand and its application to the preanesthesia evaluation is a clear example of how technology will revolutionize anesthesia practice. In order for telemedicine to continue to expand in the postpandemic period, steps must be taken to ensure that healthcare facilities and providers keep up with the times.
