To add to the small body of validity research addressing whether scores from performance assessments of clinical skills are related to performance in supervised patient settings, the authors examined relationships between United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 2 Clinical Skills (CS) data gathering and data interpretation scores and subsequent performance in history taking and physical examination in internal medicine residency training. ⋯ Step 2 CS data interpretation scores provide useful information for predicting subsequent performance in history taking and physical examination in supervised practice and thus provide validity evidence for their intended use as an indication of readiness to enter supervised practice. The results show that there is less evidence to support the usefulness of Step 2 CS data gathering scores. This study provides important information for practitioners interested in Step 2 CS specifically or in performance assessments of medical students' clinical skills more generally.

To examine associations of medical school applicant underrepresented minority (URM) status and socioeconomic status (SES) with Multiple Mini-Interview (MMI) invitation and performance and acceptance recommendation. ⋯ MMI-based admissions did not disfavor URM applicants. Lower SES applicants had lower MMI scores but were more likely to be invited to an MMI and recommended for acceptance. Multischool collaborations should examine how MMI-based admissions affect URM and lower SES applicants.

Translational educational outcomes have been defined as starting in simulation laboratories (T1) and moving downstream to improved patient care practices (T2), patient outcomes (T3), and cost/other value outcomes (T4). The authors conducted a realist synthesis review of the literature to evaluate the translational effect of simulation-based mastery learning (SBML) principles beyond the laboratory. They also sought to address future directions in SBML to improve patient care processes and outcomes and, thus, the quality of health care delivery. ⋯ Findings suggest health professions education conducted using SBML methodology can improve patient care processes and outcomes. Further research is needed to understand the translational impact of SBML for nontechnical skills, including teamwork, and skill retention.
