Previous studies have demonstrated that blood urea nitrogen (BUN) is strongly associated with sepsis. However, no data are currently available regarding the association of BUN levels and neonatal sepsis. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the role of BUN in predicting the presence and severity of neonatal sepsis. ⋯ Higher BUN level is independently linked with the presence and severity of neonatal sepsis.

Tripteryguim wilfordii Hook (TWH) has significant anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties and is widely used for treating autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. However, the multi-target mechanism of TWH on ankylosing spondylitis (AS) remains to be elucidated. ⋯ Verified by network pharmacology approach based on data mining and molecular docking methods, multi-target drug TWH may serve as a promising therapeutic candidate for AS but still needs further in vivo/in vitro experiments.

This study was designed to explore the expression and the diagnostic value of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt-1) in pernicious placenta previa (PPP) combined placental accreta/increta. A total of 140 PPP patients were enrolled and divided into two groups: 56 patients with placenta accreta/increta (PA group), and 84 patients without placenta accreta/increta (non-PA group). In the same period, 46 pregnant women without PPP who had undergone caesarean section were selected as controls. ⋯ KEY POINTSThe levels of VEGF and sFlt-1 could be used to distinguish placenta accreta from placenta increta. VEGF is negatively correlated with sFlt-1 in PPP patients. The levels of VEGF and sFlt-1 could be used as auxiliary indicators to diagnose PPP and distinguish between placenta accreta and increta.

This study aims to explore the relevance between YKL-40 and recurrence and progression of bladder cancer, and determine whether YKL-40 can be used as a potential target in patients with bladder cancer. ⋯ YKL-40 promoted the migration and invasion of bladder cancer cells by up regulating the EMT gene expression. The YKL-40 expression is closely related to the invasion and migration of bladder cancer.

Although patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) are at higher risk of hip fracture, data regarding the effect of DM on rehabilitation outcomes are limited. ⋯ Patients with well-controlled DM have similar post-hip fracture rehabilitation potential compared with non-diabetics, despite more co-morbidities. These results support resource allocation for post-hip fracture rehabilitation among patients with DM. The higher 1-year all-cause mortality in patients with DM reinforces the need for close follow-up and control of co-morbidities in this population.
