Although abnormal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) protein can be used to predict the outcome of tuberculous meningitis (TBM) and diagnose TBM, normal CSF protein remains a concern in patients with TBM. This retrospective study aimed to assess the clinical characteristics associated with normal CSF protein, to resolve the dilemma of CSF protein in the management of childhood TBM. ⋯ In suspected childhood TBM, patients without vomiting or having low serum glucose are easy to present with normal CSF protein. Hence, when interpreting the level of CSF protein in children with such characteristics, a careful clinical assessment is required.KEY MESSAGESIn suspected childhood tuberculous meningitis, patients without vomiting or having low serum glucose are easy to present with normal CSF protein. This study was performed to compare severe clinical outcome between initially asymptomatic and symptomatic infections and to identify risk factors associated with high patient mortality among initially asymptomatic patients. ⋯ The mortality risk was not determined by the initial presence of symptom among hospitalized COVID-19 patients. The CCIS was the most potent predictors for mortality. The clinicians should predict the risk of death by evaluating age and comorbidities but not the initial presence of symptom. Key messages The mortality rate was not different between initially asymptomatic and symptomatic patients. Symptomatic patients were more likely to admitted to the intensive care unit. Age and comorbidities were the potent risk factors for mortality.

The prevalence of obesity and dyslipidaemia was observed to be increased among the tribal populations, due to globalization. ⋯ The observed differences can possibly attribute to both their respective ancestries resulting in different gene pools and the physical environment. The results of the study highlight the importance of gene-gene and gene-environment interactions in adverse phenotype groups.KEY MESSAGEAmong the tribal population, the prevalence of obesity and dyslipidaemia has been increased.Differential distribution and associations of selected markers hint towards differential genetic architecture in these populations.MC4R rs17782313 polymorphism was found to show a significantly decreased risk for WHtR and low HDL among the Liangmai tribe and BMI among the Mizo tribe.Significant increased risk posed by FTO rs9939609 gene polymorphism was moderated by the interaction with MC4R rs17782313.

Functional capacity (FC) is known to affect morbidity and mortality in kidney transplantation. Despite this important role, little is known about the variables influencing post-transplant FC. Our study aims at identifying these crucial associations. ⋯ Kidney transplantation is associated with substantial improvement in all stages of FC in KTRs. Glucocorticoid withdrawal and diabetes mellitus are potentially modifiable factors of FC and merit further considerations during pre-transplant workup and post-transplant immunosuppressive therapeutic planning.Key messagesKidney transplantation is associated with substantial improvement in all stages of FC in KTRs.Glucocorticoid withdrawal and diabetes mellitus are potentially modifiable factors of FC and merit further considerations during pre-transplant workup and post-transplant immunosuppressive therapeutic planning.

The liver fat score (LFS) has been proposed to be a simple non-invasive marker of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which is highly prevalent in the general population. We tested its association with cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and prognosis. ⋯ NAFLD is usually asymptomatic, but this large study of a large general population shows that LFS is associated with CHD, CHF, angina pectoris, cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. Determining the LFS is worthwhile, as it identifies people with NAFLD, who may also be at increased cardiovascular risk.Key MessagesLiver fat score (LFS), a non-invasive marker of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), is associated with coronary heart disease (CHD), congestive heart failure (CHF) and angina.LFS is also associated with increased cardiovascular and all-cause mortality.Determining the LFS is worthwhile as it identifies people with NAFLD as well as increased cardiovascular risk.
