Patients appear to maintain sequelae post-coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) affecting daily life and physical health. We investigated the changes in and the effects of pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) on exercise capacity and immunology six months after COVID-19 hospitalization. ⋯ These findings suggest PR may be a strategy to promote the improvement of exercise capacity after COVID-19.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common condition affecting human joints. Along with mechanical and genetic factors, low-grade inflammation is increasingly supported as a causal factor in the development of OA. Gut microbiota and intestinal permeability, via the disruption of tight junction competency, are proposed to explain a gut-joint axis through the interaction with the host immune system. ⋯ KEY MESSAGESPrevious studies and methods have underestimated the impact of the gut-joint axis in osteoarthritis and have focussed on the characterisation of microbiota phenotypes rather than clear molecular mediators of disease. Gut dysbiosis is related to higher levels of bacterial toxins that elicit cartilage and synovium inflammatory pathways. Future research may benefit from focussing on both tight junctions and bacterially-produced products.

To compare patients with DKA, hyperglycaemic hyperosmolar syndrome (HHS), or mixed DKA-HHS and COVID-19 [COVID (+)] to COVID-19-negative (-) [COVID (-)] patients with DKA/HHS from a low-income, racially/ethnically diverse catchment area. ⋯ Compared with COVID (-) patients, COVID (+) patients with DKA/HHS are more likely to have T2D. Despite less severe metabolic acidosis, COVID (+) patients may require more time to resolve the hyperglycaemic crisis and experience more hypoglycaemia while suffering greater LOS and risk of mortality. Larger studies are needed to examine whether differences in management between COVID (+) and (-) patients affect outcomes with DKA/HHS.

Laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) is a common malignant tumour of the head and neck. Our previous study reveals that the circular RNA (circRNA) hsa_circ_0042823 is abnormally expressed in LSCC, suggesting that hsa_circ_0042823 is closely associated with LSCC. Here, we attempted to explore the molecular mechanism of hsa_circ_0042823 in LSCC. ⋯ Hsa_circ_0042823/miR-877-5p/FOXM1 axis participates in the progression of LSCC. This work demonstrates that hsa_circ_0042823 accelerates cancer progression by regulating miR-877-5p/FOXM1 axis in LSCC. Therefore, this study may provide new insights into the pathogenesis of LSCC.KEY MESSAGESHsa_circ_0042823 promotes FOXM1 expression by sponging miR-877-5p.Hsa_circ_0042823 promotes proliferation, migration, invasion of LSCC cells.Hsa_circ_0042823 knockdown inhibits tumour growth of LSCC via miR-877-5p/FOXM1 axis.

Online video learning has been gaining substantial attention in medical education. The purpose of the study was to evaluate medical students' online video-viewing patterns as well as to identify features associated with their class style preferences in precision medicine courses. ⋯ Association between medical students' preferred class styles and online video-viewing patterns was not necessarily linked. However, medical teachers are recommended to modify class styles based on medical students' expectations after pre-class learning, thereby providing precision medical education.KEY MESSAGEImplementing precision medical education in the blended class is feasible.Online video learning is an ideal platform for balancing the dilemma between increasing the cognitive load of class content and the practice of precision medical education. The association between medical students' preferred class styles and online video-viewing patterns was not clearly seen.
