To assess the value of pleural effusion volume (PEV) quantified on chest computed tomography (CT) in patients with early stage acute pancreatitis (AP). ⋯ PEV quantified on chest CT positively associated with the duration of hospitalization, CRP levels, Ranson, BISAP, Marshall, APACHE II, CTSI, and EPIC scores. It can be a reliable radiologic biomarker in predicting severity and clinical outcomes of AP.KEY MESSAGESPleural effusion is a common chest finding in patients with acute pancreatitis.Pleural effusion volume quantified on chest CT examination positively associated with the duration of hospitalization, CRP level, as well as Ranson, BISAP, Marshall, APACHE II, CTSI, and EPIC scoring systems.Pleural effusion volume can be a reliable radiologic biomarker in the prediction of severity and clinical outcomes of acute pancreatitis.

Low triiodothyronine syndrome (LT3S), frequently seen in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI), has been regarded as a predictor of poor outcomes after AMI. However, little is known about the prognostic value of LT3S in euthyroid patients with myocardial infarction with nonobstructive coronary arteries (MINOCA). ⋯ LT3S was independently associated with poor outcomes after MINOCA. Routine assessment of LT3S may provide valuable prognostic information in this specific population.

The main risk factor for uterine scar dehiscence is a previous caesarean section. Better characterisation of the ultrasonographic features of uterine scar dehiscence may improve preoperative diagnostic accuracy in pregnant women with a caesarean scar. This study aimed to evaluate the ultrasonographic features of uterine scar dehiscence in pregnant women and maternal and neonatal outcomes. ⋯ Preoperative detection of uterine scar dehiscence in women with previous caesarean delivery helps prevent maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. However, the maximum benefit can only be obtained by scanning at appropriate intervals during pregnancy and accurate recognition of the ultrasonographic features of uterine scar dehiscence.KEY MESSAGESPreoperative detection of uterine scar dehiscence in women with previous caesarean delivery helps prevent maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality.Scanning at appropriate intervals during pregnancy and accurate recognition of the ultrasonographic features of uterine scar dehiscence could be beneficial.Even when uterine dehiscence is detected by ultrasound during the second trimester, conservative management via strict observation alone is also feasible.

Epicardial fat thickness is an interesting parameter of early atherosclerosis. We prospectively assessed whether weight loss following laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) leads to a significant reduction in the epicardial fat thickness (EFT) and the correlation between the decline in the epicardial fat thickness with other clinical parameters. ⋯ LSG can have a favourable impact on metabolic syndrome aspects, namely EFT, as it can decrease it considerably.

Circulating white blood cells and lung function impairment: the observational studies and Mendelian randomization analysis.
Circulating white blood cell (WBC) counts have been related to lung function impairment, but causal relationship was not established. We aimed to evaluate independent effects and causal relationships of WBC subtypes with lung function. ⋯ WBC subtypes were independently associated with lower lung function except lymphocytes. Our findings suggest that circulating neutrophils may be causal factors in lung function impairment.KEY MESSAGESWhite blood cell (WBC) subtypes were negatively associated with lung function level except lymphocytes in the observational studies.Associations of WBC subtypes with lung function may be modified by sex and smoking.Mendelian randomization analysis shows that neutrophils may be causal factors in lung function impairment.
