To compare patients with DKA, hyperglycaemic hyperosmolar syndrome (HHS), or mixed DKA-HHS and COVID-19 [COVID (+)] to COVID-19-negative (-) [COVID (-)] patients with DKA/HHS from a low-income, racially/ethnically diverse catchment area. ⋯ Compared with COVID (-) patients, COVID (+) patients with DKA/HHS are more likely to have T2D. Despite less severe metabolic acidosis, COVID (+) patients may require more time to resolve the hyperglycaemic crisis and experience more hypoglycaemia while suffering greater LOS and risk of mortality. Larger studies are needed to examine whether differences in management between COVID (+) and (-) patients affect outcomes with DKA/HHS.

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are involved in the progression of various cancers, including clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). This study aimed to investigate the expression and prognostic value of long intergenic non-protein coding RNA (LINC) 01232 in ccRCC and preliminary explore the molecular mechanism underlying the role of LINC01232 in ccRCC progression. ⋯ LINC01232 may be an independent prognostic biomarker in ccRCC and plays an oncogenic role in ccRCC progression by sponging miR-204-5p and upregulating RAB22A.

This study aims to examine the outcome of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients admitted with sepsis to the intensive care unit (ICU). ⋯ ESRD patients admitted to the intensive care unit with sepsis are at greater odds of mortality compared to patients with non-ESRD. This risk is particularly increased if these patients have a concomitant history of chronic cardiac and respiratory illnesses.Key MessagesSepsis and bacterial infections are very common in ESRD patients and following cardiovascular disease; sepsis is the second leading cause of death in patients with ESRD.This study aims to examine the outcome of patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients admitted with sepsis to the intensive care unit (ICU).The results of this study have shown that end-stage renal disease is associated with greater odds of ICU and hospital mortality among septic patients admitted to an intensive care unit.ESRD patients were also more likely to be started on vasopressors and mechanical ventilation.

This study examines epidemiological trends of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in Germany from 2004-2015 across different age groups, using data of the population-based KORA myocardial infarction registry. ⋯ Inhomogeneous AMI trends across age-groups indicate progress in prevention and treatment for the population >64 years, while among <55-year-olds, we found no significant trend in AMI morbidity and mortality.KEY MESSAGESAge standardised AMI mortality continued to decline from 2009 to 2015 in the study region.Declines in AMI mortality were driven by declines in event rates (both incidence and recurrence rates) and case fatality.AMI trends were inconsistent across different age groups with the strongest declines in mortality and event rates among the elderly population (75-84 years of age).

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is characterized by severe local and systemic inflammation. Ac2-26, an Annexin A1 Peptide, can reduce the lung injury induced by reperfusion via the inhibition of inflammation. The present study aims to evaluate the effect and mechanism of Ac2-26 in ARDS. ⋯ Ac2-26 reduced the lung injury induced by LPS, promoted alveolar-capillary permeability, ameliorated the local and systemic inflammation, and inhibited the oxidative stress response and apoptosis. The protection of Ac2-26 on ARDS was mainly dependent on the FPR pathway.
