In order to identify therapeutic targets in Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), it is important to identify molecules involved in the biological responses that are modulated in COVID-19. Lysophosphatidic acids (LPAs) are involved in the pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis are one of the candidate molecules. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between the serum levels of autotaxin (ATX), which are enzymes involved in the synthesis of lysophosphatidic acids. ⋯ COVID-19 patients showed a decrease in the serum levels of ATX, irrespective of the disease severity. Key MessagesAutotaxin (ATX) is an enzyme involved in the synthesis of lysophosphatidic acid (LPA), which has been reported to be involved in pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis. Patients with COVID-19 show decrease in the serum levels of ATX. Modulation of ATX might be compensatory biological responses to suppress immunological overreaction.

Though risk factors of postoperative delirium are well described, its pathophysiology is still undiscovered. The primary objective of the current study is to assess whether increased pre- and postoperative myeloperoxidase (MPO) levels are associated with postoperative delirium in the population of cardiac surgery patients. The secondary objective is to evaluate the correlation between MPO levels and serum antioxidant capacity (AC). ⋯ Cardiac surgery patients with less efficient antioxidative mechanisms experience a higher postoperative peak of serum MPO, which in turn may predispose to postoperative delirium development.KEY MESSAGESMPO is a lysosomal enzyme with strong pro-oxidative and pro-inflammatory properties.Cardiac surgery patients who have increased concentration of postoperative MPO are at significantly higher risk of postoperative delirium development. This higher level of postoperative MPO is negatively correlated with baseline antioxidant capacity (AC).It can be hypothesized that individuals with decreased baseline AC experience a higher peak of MPO post-surgery due to less efficient antioxidative mechanisms, which in turn contributes to postoperative delirium development.

In recent years, China has actively promoted the construction of first-class universities and disciplines of the world ('Double First-Class'), and built a new model of university development to solve Chinese problems and support high-quality economic and social development. In the context of China's efforts to promote the construction of new engineering, new medicine, new agriculture, and new liberal arts (referred to as the 'four new' disciplines), these disciplines are developing rapidly. As a specialty dealing with major life issues, medical education has become increasingly prominent. ⋯ KEY MESSAGESThe implementation of the 'four new' disciplines is a strategic choice for higher education. Engineering technology is an efficient path and hands-on approach to solving medical problems. Interdisciplinary and comprehensive educational approaches play an important role in the development of medical science.

Controlling the epidemic spread and establishing the immune barrier in a short time through accurate vaccine demand prediction and optimised vaccine allocation strategy are still urgent problems to be solved under the condition of frequent virus mutations. ⋯ This is the first study to use a particle swarm optimisation algorithm to study the cross-regional allocation of COVID-19 vaccines. These data provide a theoretical basis for countries and regions to develop more targeted and sustainable vaccination strategies.KEY MESSAGEThe innovative combination of particle swarm optimisation and cross-regional SEIR model to simulate the pandemic trajectory and predict the vaccine demand helped to speed up and stabilise the construction of the immune barrier, especially faced with new virus mutations. We proposed that priority should be given to regions where it is possible to prevent more infections rather than regions where it is at high initial risk, thus regional outbreak risk should be considered when making vaccine allocation decisions. An optimal health-oriented strategy for vaccine allocation in the COVID-19 pandemic is determined considering both pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical policy interventions, including speed of isolation, degree of social distancing control, and frequency of mask-wearing.

To analyse the clinical symptoms, laboratory examinations and chest CT findings of children infected by the B.1.617.2 variant of COVID-19 and to compare the differences between clinical subtypes. ⋯ The pathogenetic condition of children with B.1.617.2 variant infection is mild. Although there were intergroup differences in some blood cell analyses, T-lymphocyte counts, and comprehensive biochemical indicators, no factors had a significant effect on clinical typing and the presence or absence of symptoms. CT findings and CT scores reflect disease stage and pathological changes and correlate moderately with laboratory tests, making them of good value for disease diagnosis and monitoring.Key MessagesPaediatric patients infected with B.1.617.2 variant have a milder clinical and imaging presentation than adults and are similar to the prototype infection.CT findings and scores which reflect disease stages and pathological changes. There is a correlation between chest CT and laboratory tests, which can be useful for the diagnosis and follow-up of the disease.
