The objective of this meta-analysis was to identify whether headache increase the risk of dry eye disease (DED). ⋯ This study indicates that headache is related to a higher risk of DED, especially in the migraine patients. These results suggest that headaches should be regarded as an independent risk factor for DED.KEY MESSAGESIn this meta-analysis, 11 studies (one cohort study, four case-control studies and six cross-sectional studies) covering 3,575,957 individuals were included.Pooled analysis indicated that all-cause headache was related to a higher risk of dry eye (OR = 1.586, 95% CI: 1.409-1.785, I2 = 89.3%, p < .001).These results suggest that headaches should be regarded as an independent risk factor for dry eye.

Hyperuricaemia can lead to gout and is associated with an increased risk of cardiometabolic disease. We aimed to investigate the prevalence of hyperuricaemia and its related factors in Chinese children and adolescents. ⋯ The prevalence of hyperuricaemia in Chinese children and adolescents is unexpectedly high. The findings suggest an urgent need to implement effective interventions to reduce risk of hyperuricaemia in Chinese youths.KEY MESSAGESQuestion: What is the prevalence of hyperuricaemia in Chinese children and adolescents?Findings: In this large pooled cross-sectional study comprising >50,000 children and adolescents aged 3-19 years, we found that the prevalence of hyperuricaemia was high in overall population and subgroups of sex, age, obesity, region and survey year.Meaning: Our findings indicate that hyperuricaemia is an important health problem in Chinese children and adolescents, and effective intervention strategies are needed to reduce its burden.

Extended antithrombotic treatment is recommended for secondary prevention of unprovoked venous thromboembolism (VTE), however, there is no consensus on which antithrombotic strategy is preferable. ⋯ Apixaban showed superiority to other antithrombotic strategies on major bleeding and all-cause death for secondary prevention of unprovoked VTE. Further studies are warranted owing to the limited number of studies and positive cases.Key messagesAll antithrombotic strategies including warfarin, DOACs and aspirin were superior to placebo/observation on recurrent VTE for secondary prevention of unprovoked VTE.Apixaban demonstrated lower risk of major bleeding than warfarin, and lower risk of all-cause death than placebo/observation.Further research about the efficacy and safety of antithrombotic treatments for secondary prevention of unprovoked VTE is warranted.

Effectiveness of bone substitute materials in opening wedge high tibial osteotomy: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
A meta-analysis of eligible studies was performed to evaluate the effectiveness of bone substitute materials (BSMs) in opening wedge high tibial osteotomy (OWHTO) for knee osteoarthritis. ⋯ BSM combined with locking plate techniques offers a safe and efficient alternative option in OWHTO for osteotomy gap larger than 10 mm, but be aware of the possibility of bone non-union. Given the inherent heterogeneity and low quality of the included studies, future well-designed RCTs are essential to verify the findings.KEY MESSAGEThe treatment of the osteotomy gap is still controversial.BSM combined with a locking plate offers a safe and efficient alternative option for OWHTO with an over 10 mm of osteotomy gap over 10 mm.Due to the inherent heterogeneity and low quality of the included studies, the results should be cautiously interpreted in clinical practice.

The present systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials (RCTs) aimed to investigate the effects of pulmonary rehabilitation in individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). ⋯ Yoga and Tai Chi showed a significant improvement in the FEV1% predicted value. Also, pulmonary rehabilitation program improved the exercise capacity, the quality of life, and dyspnoea in patients with COPD.Key messagesA total of 39 trials involving 2,397 participants with COPD were evaluated. We found that patients who received pulmonary rehabilitation program had significant improvement in the 6MWT, St. George Respiratory Questionnaire score, and the modified British Medical Research Council score as compared to those who received usual care.Yoga and Tai Chi showed significant improvement in the FEV1% predicted value. No significant difference was detected in the modified Borg score, FVC, and FEV1/FVC predicted value between the pulmonary rehabilitation and usual care groups.
