To evaluate the role of M2 macrophages in subconjunctival fibrosis after silicone implantation (SI) and investigate the underlying mechanisms. ⋯ TGF-β1/Smad2/3-YAP/TAZ signalling may be involved in M2-induced fibrotic activities in HTFs. M2 plays a key role in promoting subconjunctival fibrosis and can serve as an attractive target for anti-fibrotic therapeutics.

Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a common respiratory pathogen that causes respiratory tract infections. In India, HMPV has been identified as one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in infants and young children with respiratory tract infections. The most reported sublineages of HMPV in India are B1, B2, A2b and A2c. ⋯ Clinical analysis showed that four cases had coinfections with other pathogens. Our extensive analysis of patient samples determined that HMPV, especially the A2c genotype, significantly contributed to SARI cases within our study population, which signifies the importance of considering HMPV as a probable aetiological agent when investigating SARI outbreaks.

Cushing's syndrome (CS) is associated with increased risk for heart failure, which often initially manifests as left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LVDD). In this study, we aimed to explore the potential risk factors of LVDD in CS by incorporating body composition parameters. ⋯ CS was associated with marked accumulation of EAT and visceral fat, reduced skeletal muscle mass, and increased prevalence of LVDD. EATV was an independent risk factor for LVDD, suggesting the potential role of EAT in the development of LVDD in CS.

Since the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), studies have found correlations between blood cell count-derived inflammatory markers (BCDIMs) and disease severity and prognosis in COVID-19 patients. However, there is currently a lack of systematic comparisons between procalcitonin (PCT), C-reactive protein (CRP), C-reactive protein-to-albumin ratio (CAR) and BCDIMs for assessing the severity and prognosis of COVID-19 patients. ⋯ PCT, CRP, CAR and BCDIMs, easily obtained in clinical settings, are valuable predictors of disease severity and the 28-day mortality in COVID-19 patients. The NLR is particularly effective for disease severity, while the LCR is highly predictive of 28-day mortality. These markers provide guidance for stratified management of COVID-19 patients.

This study aimed to re-evaluate whether the scoring systems, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) were effective in predicting prognosis and severity of COVID-19 patients in the emergency department (ED). ⋯ The NEWS and CCEDRRN COVID-19 Mortality Score were reconfirmed for early and rapid predicting the poor prognosis and severity of COVID-19 patients in ED, especially the CCEDRRN COVID-19 Mortality Score with the highest discrimination capacity, and NLR was more appropriate for predicting the severity.
