Arising from the city of Wuhan, Hubei province in China, a novel coronavirus named severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 has been rapidly spreading since its first presentation in late 2019. The World Health Organization declared a pandemic on the 11th March 2020, and as of 29th of April 2020 more than 3 million cases have been reported worldwide with over 225 000 confirmed deaths. Where mechanical ventilation may not be enough, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) could play a role as a form of rescue therapy and may provide beneficial results in the hands of skilled clinicians in centers with experience of using ECMO appropriately in selected patients. Our understanding of COVID-19 is ever-changing and the need for intensive care beds is rising, which means that ECMO will surely play a key role in the near future.

Caseous calcification of the mitral annulus (CCMA) is a very rare form of mitral annular calcification (MAC). CCMA accounts for 0.63% of all cases and 0.06-0.07% of the total population and usually seen in elderly and female patients. It mostly affects the posterior leaflet of the mitral valve. ⋯ Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging may help in differentiating MAC from CCMA and should perform. The first treatment option should be conservative treatment because of surgical complications of the procedure. We presented a case report which is about CCMA with preoperative and intraoperative robotic images.

To create equitable access to donor organs for the highest mortality patients, the cardiac transplant allocation system now prioritizes patients with surgically implanted temporary left ventricular assist devices (T-LVADs). The outcomes following a direct bridge from a T-LVAD to orthotopic heart transplant (OHT) are not well delineated. ⋯ This study demonstrates that most patients waitlisted with a T-LVAD are successfully bridged to durable therapy or recover, and those bridged to OHT have acceptable posttransplant outcomes, particularly when T-RVADs are not required.

Access to centers with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) capabilities varies by region and may affect overall outcomes. We assessed the outcomes of trauma patients requiring ECMO support and compared the overall survival of all patients with trauma at facilities with and without ECMO capabilities. ⋯ The use of ECMO for patients with trauma is expanding. Our study demonstrates a survival benefit associated with admission to a facility with ECMO capabilities. Thus, access to ECMO is a potential quality metric for trauma centers.
