The abbreviated Burn Specific Health Scale (BSHS-A) is an 80-item questionnaire that has proven useful in measuring physical, mental, social and general health in burn survivors. The aim of this study was to adapt the BSHS-A into Norwegian, including assessing reliability and validity. ⋯ BSHS-N seems to be a reliable and valid instrument for use in the Norwegian population. The translation and cross-cultural adaptation of this instrument allows for comparative international studies.

In this study, we investigated the effect of inflammatory cytokines on matrix metalloproteinase (MMP-1) and TIMP-1 production in human dermal fibroblasts, which play a pivotal role in wound healing, ranging from the synthesis and remodeling of extracellular matrix (ECM) to the synthesis of growth factors. The balance of MMPs and TIMPs is crucial in directing successful wound repair. Human adult dermal fibroblasts were seeded in six well plates (7.5 x 10(4) cells/ml) in complete media. ⋯ However, TNF-alpha significantly increases TIMP-1 protein levels. Data suggests differential regulation of MMP-1 and TIMP-1 protein levels by the cytokines found in stimulated dermal fibroblasts. Further characterization of this response will provide an understanding of the mechanisms of pathogenesis of extracellular matrix (ECM) and the potential role of metalloproteinases in tissue remodeling after injury.

High frequency percussive ventilation (HFPV) is a recent ventilatory mode, which combines conventional cycles with high frequency percussions. HFPV was initially instituted as salvage therapy after acute respiratory failure following smoke inhalation injury achieving in each case a dramatic improvement of blood oxygenation, PaCO(2) and ventilatory pressures. This study investigates the influence of HFPV on hesmodynamics, blood oxygenation and ventilatory parameters in eight stable ICU burn patients requiring artificial ventilatory support during a postoperative period following traumatic injury. ⋯ No side effects were noted. These observations suggest that HFPV could improve pulmonary gas exchanges under lower peak pressures and without hemodynamic compromise. HFPV could represent an interesting alternative open lung strategy method to improve alveolar recruitment.

The electric water heater has recently become a popular household appliance replacing the hot water dispensing jug. This device provides hot water and potable cool water directly from the faucets thus removing the need to refill the container or boil water separately in a kettle. Along with the convenience of dispensing hot water immediately has come an increased incidence of pediatric burns. ⋯ The accidents often occurred during the cold months and in the living room of the house. From this retrospective study, it was seen that the etiology and incidence of scald burns among children have changed as people have modified their household practice for obtaining hot water in our country. This study aims to increase public awareness to the problem and suggest some prevention measures to reduce this type of scald injury.

The serovars and drug susceptibility patterns of 265 isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa cultured from burn patients during 2001-2002 at Motahari and Tohid Hospital were determined. Distribution of serovars was different at two hospitals. Most of the isolates at Tohid Hospital belonged to serovar 0:1, but 21 and 13% of them were untypeable or polyagglutinable, respectively. ⋯ However, there was not any correlation between the serotyping and presence of plasmids. Changes in the drug susceptibility patterns and beta-lactamase production of some cured derivatives were observed after the strains lost their plasmids. The emergence of multi-drug resistant strains of P. aeruginosa is a serious concern in burn patients who are hospitalized in Tehran.
