A systematic review was conducted to assess the level of evidence for the use of transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) in the management of burn patients. We searched any article published before and including June 30, 2013. Our search yielded 118 total publications, 11 met the inclusion criteria of burn injury and TEE. ⋯ The advantages of TEE include offering direct assessment of cardiac valve competency, myocardial contractility, and most importantly real time assessment of adequacy of hemodynamic resuscitation and preload in the acute phase of resuscitation, with minimal additional risk. TEE serves multiple diagnostic purposes and is being used to better understand the fluid status and cardiac physiology of the critically ill burn patient. Randomized controlled trials especially on fluid resuscitation and cardiac performance in acute burns are warranted to potentially further improve outcome.

To analyze and synthesize knowledge concerning sexuality in adult burn victims through an integrative literature review. ⋯ The synthesis of the knowledge concerning sexuality in burn victims showed that sexual dysfunction can be related to the younger ages, TBSA > 20%, burns on the genitalia and on exposed areas, prolonged length of hospital stay, avoidance coping, and mental disorders. The multidisciplinary team should be prepared to integrate sexuality as an important variable in the continuing treatment of burn patients.

Neutrophil gelatinase associated lipocalin (NGAL) is a novel predictor of acute kidney injury (AKI), which increases with inflammation. We aimed to assess whether serum NGAL (SNGAL) and urine NGAL (UNGAL) can predict AKI in burned children. ⋯ SNGAL and UNGAL are good early predictors of AKI in children with severe burn. NGAL might reflect the severity of burn insult and also could be used as an indicator of inflammation in burn children.

Burns to the perineum are frequently exposed to faeces. Diverting colostomy is often described to prevent faecal soiling. Because this technique is invasive with frequent complications, use of non-surgical devices including specifically designed faecal management systems has been reported in perineal burns. ⋯ In France, non-surgical devices are the leading means of faecal diversion in perineal burns. The proposed algorithm may assist in decisions in the management of perineal burns. The expert group emphasises that large clinical studies are needed to better evaluate these devices.
