Burn injuries pose a significant burden on both patients and healthcare systems. Yet, costs arising from the consumption of resources by these patients are rarely examined in Canada. ⋯ Findings reveal that the total cost of the initial hospitalization, from a public hospital perspective, was $11,714,348. Our study underlines the substantial burden associated with burns and highlights the need for long-term cost evaluations.

Rehabilitation treatments for patients with severe burn injury (SBI) are difficult owing to the lack of knowledge, skills, and experience among clinicians and physical and occupational therapists, resulting in serious patient disability. This study retrospectively evaluated the effectiveness of rehabilitation treatments jointly considered by physiatrists and rehabilitation therapists (Physiatrist and Registered therapist Operating rehabilitation: PROr) for patients with SBI admitted to our hospital's burn intensive care unit (BICU). Eligible patients were classified into the PROr and standard rehabilitation (SR) groups. ⋯ The PROr group received more types of exercise interventions for a longer time than the SR group. No significant differences in the FAC and Barthel index scores at the first time of rehabilitation were found between the two groups; however, the scores of FAC and Barthel index at BICU and hospital discharges were higher in the PROr group than in the SR group. The PROr program may help in the functional improvement of patients with SBI.

Burn injuries are a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, affecting not only the patients but also their families. Family-based education and follow-up program are interventions that aim to improve the quality of life and psychosocial outcomes of patients with burns and their families. However, we find a lack of evidence on the effectiveness and feasibility of these programs in different settings and populations. This study aimed to evaluate the features of the family-based education and follow-up program (FBEFP), a pilot project that was developed and implemented at the Tabriz Sina Teaching Hospital in 2020 to improve its burn care system. ⋯ FBEFP is a promising intervention that enhances the well-being of patients with burns and their families. However, more evidence is needed to support its effectiveness and feasibility in different contexts and populations. The study also provided valuable insights into the benefits and challenges of implementing a Family-Based Education and Follow-up Program for patients with burns in a low-resource setting. The study contributed to the development of guidelines and recommendations for future research and practice in this field.

Approximately 120,000 children in the United States are evaluated in the emergency department annually due to burn injuries. Studies have consistently documented that pediatric burns are among the most stressful events for caregivers, resulting in a wide range of emotions, including guilt, anxiety, grief, depression, and posttraumatic stress symptoms, as well as positive psychological changes, a phenomenon known as posttraumatic growth. The present pilot study aimed to explore the prevalence of elevated perceived stress as well as posttraumatic growth among caregivers of pediatric burn patients receiving outpatient burn care and using an mHealth burn platform to administer burn treatment. ⋯ Further, approximately half of the caregiver sample reported moderate to high levels of posttraumatic growth following their child's burn injury. This pilot study clarifies the level of the perceived stress that caregivers of burn-injured children experience, particularly during the treatment phase when they are responsible for their children's outpatient burn care (e.g., dressing changes). Additionally, the results shed light on the high prevalence of moderate to high posttraumatic growth in caregivers, with a prevalence rate similar to other trauma survivors.

After acute burn injury, patients experience a hypermetabolic state often complicated by a stress-induced hyperglycemia. Recent research points towards glycemic variability as a contributing factor in adverse outcomes in critically ill patients. In burn patients, greater glycemic variability has been associated with increased rates of mortality and sepsis. ⋯ Mean glucose (OR 1.024; 95% CI 1.004-1.045) and J-index (OR 1.044; 95% CI 1.003-1.087) were associated with occurrence of infectious complications. Regarding target mean glucose threshold, a daily mean glucose above 150 mg/dL showed the strongest association with infectious complications (OR 3.634; 95% CI 1.008-13.101). Mean glucose, standard of deviation, and J-index were all independently associated with proven infection.
