Self-inflicted burns are a relatively uncommon but profound attempt at suicide. Twenty years ago, we first reviewed our experience with self-inflicted burns. With this current study, we sought to determine whether there had been any change in the incidence or outcomes of self-inflicted burns. ⋯ Unexpectedly, logistic regression analysis that controlled for age, total percent total body surface area (TBSA) burn, sex, and inhalation injury revealed that those patients with self-inflicted burns had 72 % lower odds of dying than the general population. In conclusion, there has been no improvement in the incidence of self-inflicted burns. They result in very severe injuries, but when age, burn size, gender, and inhalation injury are controlled for, they have at least as good a chance for survival as the general burn population.

The impact of the family-centered empowerment model on the children's quality of life with chemical burns and their parent's perceived stress.
Chemical burns are challenging for children and their families due to the unpleasant health consequences. Therefore, it is necessary to provide organized programs to support and educate families suffering child burns. This study aimed at determining the impact of the Family-Centered Empowerment Model (FCEM) on the quality of life of children with chemical burns and their parents' stress. ⋯ FCEM is an effective approach to reducing parental stress and improving the children's quality of life aged 1-12 years old suffered chemical burns. Therefore, it is suggested to consider the model care plan for this population.

Intravenous iron is an effective treatment for anaemia in many populations but has not been evaluated in those with burn anaemia. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of intravenous iron to manage burn anaemia. ⋯ This exploratory study provides preliminary evidence of benefit and safety of intravenous iron treatment on burn anaemia recovery.

Curcumin, a natural extract from the rhizomes of Curcuma longa, is also known as a curcuminoid. Curcumin has been studied as a therapeutic drug for wound healing because of its anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and anti-bacterial activities. However, the detailed mechanism of curcumin in wound healing is not clear. It is well-known that the skin is the largest organ in humans and prevents tissues from damage, including infection, radiation, and mechanical damage. Wound healing of the skin is a complex physiological regulation process requiring various cell types and cytokines; hence, wound healing, including surgery and care, incurs a huge expenditure each year. Transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily M member 7 (TRPM7) regulates multiple physiological and pharmacological processes through its channel and kinase activities. In addition, TRPM7 regulates cell adhesion, migration, and anti-oxidative activity, thereby playing a regulatory role in the wound healing process. This study aimed to explore the function of curcumin in the wound healing process. ⋯ Curcumin treatment promoted proliferation and migration of fibroblasts, and these effects were mediated by the signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3)/SMAD family member 3/hypoxia-inducible factor 1 subunit alpha signaling pathway. Thus, we conclude that overexpression of TRPM7 might contribute to wound healing.

Circumferential deep burns on the limb lead to a constrictive, tourniquet-like effect causing critical limb ischaemia. The treatment, escharotomy, is a time-critical procedure that sometimes is required before the patient arrives at a burn centre. At present, no practical method of teaching this procedure is incorporated into formal educational courses. ⋯ We developed a comprehensive simulator course that has been demonstrated to improve candidate's confidence in performing escharotomy. The next stage in the course development is to confirm the results in a larger cohort. By developing this simulator course we aim to improve emergency burn care education in the UK and globally.
