Comparison of non-surgical methods for the treatment of deep partial thickness skin burns of the hand.
This paper describes a randomized, controlled, parallel-group, single-center clinical trial designed to compare non surgical treatment methods of deep partial thickness skin burns of the hand. All patients were scanned with the Laser Doppler Imaging device to determine the depth of the burn wound. Viable keratinocytes sites were determined according to the established Perfusion Units (PU) measurement system. ⋯ Burn scars and injured extremity function were assessed after six months according to the Vancouver Scar Scale and Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand Outcome Measure. The fastest epithelialization of hand burn wounds was observed in the patients group treated with hydrocolloid dressings (15, 7 days, p<0,05). The patients of this group also had less scars and a better hand function.

Massage has no observable effect on distress in children with burns: A randomized, observer-blinded trial.
In a previous observational study we found that massage therapy reduced anxiety and stress in pediatric burn patients. We aimed to test this effect in a randomized controlled trial. ⋯ Massage therapy with or without essential oil was not effective in reducing distress behavior or heart rate in hospitalized children with burns. Evaluating the effectiveness of massage in terms of relaxation proved difficult in young children.

The effect of isolated soy protein adjunctive with flaxseed oil on markers of inflammation, oxidative stress, acute phase proteins, and wound healing of burn patients; a randomized clinical trial.
The objective was to determine the effect of isolated soy protein (ISP) and flaxseed oil (FO) on inflammatory and oxidative stress indices, acute phase proteins, and wound healing of burn patients. ⋯ Nutritional supplements with ISP may attenuate post-burn oxidative stress and inflammation, leading to improved wound healing in burn patients. Flaxseed oil may not exert a beneficial effect over the ISP.

Hypnosis for reduction of background pain and pain anxiety in men with burns: A blinded, randomised, placebo-controlled study.
'Background pain' and 'pain anxiety' are among the numerous problems of patients with burns. Non-pharmacological and pharmacological interventions have been used to reduce background pain and pain anxiety. This study compared the effectiveness of hypnosis and 'neutral hypnosis' (as a placebo in the control group) in decreasing the background burn pain and pain anxiety of adult male survivors with burns. ⋯ Hypnosis is effective in reducing background pain quality and pain anxiety of men with burns.

Accelerated re-epithelialization of partial-thickness skin wounds by a topical betulin gel: Results of a randomized phase III clinical trials program.
The clinical significance of timely re-epithelialization is obvious in burn care, since delayed wound closure is enhancing the risk of wound site infection and extensive scarring. Topical treatments that accelerate wound healing are urgently needed to reduce these sequelae. Evidence from preliminary studies suggests that betulin can accelerate the healing of different types of wounds, including second degree burns and split-thickness skin graft wounds. ⋯ This agreed with unblinded direct clinical assessment (difference=-2.1 days [95% CI, -2.7 to -1.5]; p<0.0001). Adverse events possibly related to treatment were mild or moderate and mostly at the application site. TBG accelerates re-epithelialization of partial thickness wounds compared to the current standard of care, providing a well-tolerated contribution to burn care in practice.
