Microbial contamination of human skin allografts is a frequent cause of allograft discard. Our purpose was to evaluate the discard rate of skin bank contaminated allografts and specific procedures used to reduce allograft contamination without affecting safety. ⋯ Few simple pragmatic measures (including skin incubation in the antibiotic bath for at least 96 h at 4 °C, splitting the skin harvesting areas to minimize the risk of cross-infection and clinical use of allografts contaminated with saprophytic and non-pathogenic germs) can reduce the discard rate of contaminated allografts without affecting clinical safety.

Orofacial rehabilitation after severe orofacial and neck burn: Experience in a Brazilian burn reference centre.
To quantify the benefits of a functional oral rehabilitation program for impairment caused by full thickness orofacial and neck burns, comparing the effects of early and late intervention. ⋯ The results of this study indicate that non-invasive orofacial contracture management is effective for patients with orofacial and neck burns, including those with long term sequelae.

Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapies are emerging as a promising strategy to promote tissue repair, and may extend their utility to burn care. This comprehensive review of the extant literature, evaluated all in vivo studies, to elucidate the potential protective and therapeutic effect of MSCs in acute thermal skin burns. ⋯ MSC therapy show positive results, regarding improved burn wound healing and immunologic response. However, most findings are based on small animal studies. Randomized clinical trials are warranted to investigate the regenerative effects in human burns before translating the findings into clinical practice.

Determining the efficacy of anti-scar technologies can be difficult as qualitative, subjective assessments are often utilized instead of systematic, objective measures. Perceptions regarding the reliability of instruments for quantitative measurements along with their high cost and increased data collection time may discourage their use, leading to use of scar scales which are relatively quick and low-cost. To directly evaluate the reliability of instruments for quantitative measurements of scar properties, instruments and two qualitative scales were compared by assessing a variety of cutaneous scars. ⋯ Non-invasive instruments allow scar properties to be quantitatively assessed with high sensitivity and as a function of time and/or treatment without the need for biopsy collection. Overall, the reliability of scar assessments was significantly improved when quantitative instruments were utilized versus scar scales. Quantitative assessment of color and biomechanics were swift, requiring less than 90 s per measurement while assessments of texture and height required additional analysis time after collection. With proper training of clinical staff and well-defined protocols for measurement collection, reliable, quantitative assessments of scar properties can be collected with little disruption to the clinical workflow.

Narrative discourse of burn injury and recovery on peer support websites: A qualitative analysis.
Although advances have been made in burn care and recovery, less is known about the experience of living with severe burn injury. Like other patient groups, burn survivors are now turning to social media and shared web-based peer support resources during recovery and continuing long after discharge. Ongoing peer support is often part of the reclamation process after-burn injury. Peer support and event sharing helps foster hope, motivation and reassurance.
