This study explored whether the use of virtual reality (VR) was a standard of care during burn care at burn verified facilities in the United States. Surveys were sent to American Burn Association verified burn centers to investigate if VR was being used as a standard of care, if protocols for using VR are in place and how they were developed, and what barriers these facilities are facing and several other topics investigated. Out of the 64 facilities surveyed, 21 responses were collected. ⋯ Out of the seven hospitals currently using VR, two reported a decrease in opioid use with burn care with the use of VR. Although the current results indicate that VR is not frequently used clinically during burn care at most burn centers, 83.3% of burn centers reported they see themselves using VR in the future. As VR becomes more widely disseminated, future research should be conducted to continue to see if VR is becoming a standard of care and whether VR is making clinical impacts on pain, opioid use, and level of anxiety among burn patients.

To evaluate the loss of lean mass in patients with burns using ultrasonography of the quadriceps muscle of the thigh. ⋯ Muscle loss occurred early and rapidly within the first seven days of hospitalization, reflecting the impact of burn injury on nutritional risk. An association was observed between muscle thickness loss and age, but no association was observed with the extent of burn, length of hospital stay, occurrence of health-related infections or mortality. These findings suggest the importance of monitoring muscle loss in these patients in planning nutritional therapy, early mobilization, and prevention of complications.

Effect of anti-gravity treadmill (Alter G) training on gait characteristics and postural stability in adult with healed burns: A single blinded randomized controlled trial.
Burns constitute one of the foremost contributors to premature mortality and morbidity, and the recovery process from burn injuries is characterized by its intricate and protracted nature. ⋯ The amalgamation of anti-gravity treadmill training with the traditional physical therapy program yields greater efficacy than TPTP in isolation. Consequently, the findings underscore the efficiency of anti-gravity treadmill (Alter G) Training as a valuable tool for rehabilitating patients with burn injuries.

Response of bone mineral density and balance performance in post-burn patients with selected Qigong training: A single-blind randomized controlled trial.
Decreased bone mineral density (BMD) is a common condition after a burn with significant complications that would be a global health problem. Also, balance can further worsen due to burning complications. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the additive effects of selected Qigong training exercises for 2 months to the standard physiotherapy regimen on bone mineral density and balance control post-thermal burn injuries. ⋯ In patients with repaired second and third-degree thermal burns of the trunk and lower legs, Qigong training activities combined with a standard physiotherapy regimen for 2 months were more helpful in increasing bone mineral density and improving balance control than the standard physiotherapy regimen alone.
