Scalds are the most common mechanism of burn injury in pediatric populations and scald burns sustained during bathing present a unique opportunity for injury prevention. Evidence-based infant bathing educational resources recommend checking water temperature and having a caregiver present for the duration of the bath, but do not explicitly recommend avoiding running water or explain the associated risks. This study seeks to determine the incidence and role of running water in bathing scald burns at our institution. ⋯ We found that the vast majority of bathing scald burns involved running water, identifying a specific bathing recommendation that should be added to existing guidelines to reduce the incidence of bathing scald burns.

The study aim was to investigate if Suprathel® can be an adequate alternative to Mepilex® Ag for the treatment of partial-thickness scalds in children. ⋯ Two different treatments were compared for children with partial-thickness scalds, and the data indicates that similar results are received with both dressings.

To clarify and elaborate on the choices that were made in the development of the Patient Scale of the Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale 3.0 (POSAS 3.0), based upon the rich information obtained from patients during focus groups and pilot tests. ⋯ Based upon the unique and rich material of patient input obtained, two versions of the Patient Scale of the POSAS3.0 were developed: the Generic version, and the Linear scar version. The discussions and decisions taken during the development are informative for a good understanding of the POSAS 3.0 and are indispensable as a background for future translations and cross-cultural adaptations.

The Surviving Sepsis Campaign was developed to improve outcomes for all patients with sepsis. Despite sepsis being the primary cause of death after thermal injury, burns have always been excluded from the Surviving Sepsis efforts. To improve sepsis outcomes in burn patients, an international group of burn experts developed the Surviving Sepsis After Burn Campaign (SSABC) as a testable guideline to improve burn sepsis outcomes. ⋯ Members of the burn community from the around the world have developed the Surviving Sepsis After Burn Campaign guidelines with the goal of improving the outcome of sepsis in burn patients.

Following burns a sustained catabolic stress response is activated, resulting in skeletal muscle wasting. A better understanding of the underlying mechanisms of postburn skeletal muscle wasting is essential for the development of preventive and/or therapeutic strategies. Six weeks old female rats underwent a sham, 10% or 40% total body surface area scald burn. ⋯ MURF1,2,3 and Atrogin-1 was significantly higher in SOL, whilst in EDL MURF1,2,3 was significantly lower postburn. In both muscles, FOXO3A was significantly lower postburn. This study identified postburn changes in muscle anthropomorphology and proteins involved in pathways regulating protein synthesis and breakdown, with more pronounced catabolic effects in SOL.
