Comparative StudyComparison of the h index with standard bibliometric indicators to rank influential otolaryngologists in Europe and North America.
The Hirsch (h) index is an original and simple new bibliometric measure incorporating both quantity and quality. In this study, our aim was first to present characteristics of the statistical correlation between the h index and several standard bibliometric indicators and secondly we compared the h index between otolaryngologists from Europe and US. We used the Institute of Scientific Information (ISI) Web of Knowledge to identify citation reports from a random sample of influential editors from six otolaryngology journals: Journal of Laryngology and Otology (n = 21), Clinical Otolaryngology (n = 16), European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology (n = 49), The Laryngoscope (n = 66), Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (n = 15), and Archives of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (n = 15). ⋯ However, the median C, CS and h were statistically significant. In conclusion, the h index is a simple yet powerful indicator as it combines productivity and impact. Overall, the US editorial panel have a higher h index.

Issues patients would like to discuss at their review consultation: variation by early and late stage oral, oropharyngeal and laryngeal subsites.
The patient concerns inventory (PCI) was developed to help patients raise issues/concerns during routine follow-up and to indicate team members they want to see. This paper reports the use of the PCI across various H&N Cancer sub-sites (oral, oropharyngeal and laryngeal) and stages of disease (early and late) and describes the main concerns that patients want to discuss using a cross-sectional survey comprising the PCI with the University of Washington Quality of Life questionnaire. Patients treated for primary H&N squamous cell carcinoma, 1998-2009, were identified from the University Hospital Aintree H&N Cancer database. 447/775 (58 %) patients responded. ⋯ The results indicated that PCI can be readily incorporated into managing HNC patients and supports a holistic multidisciplinary approach to clinic consultations. It accommodates difficult issues such as fear of recurrence and intimacy. Completion of the PCI by patients before consultation can highlight problems and concerns that doctors can target for discussion, thereby streamlining consultations, and ensuring that patient needs are better met, thus creating a more effective service.

Effects of cetirizine on isolated rat's tracheal smooth muscle.
Cetirizine (Zytec) is often used as a histamine receptor-1 (H(1)) antagonist in rhinitis patients who are suffering from sneezing and rhinorrhea. This H(1) antagonist is used as an oral tablet or nasal spray solution. The effect of H(1) antagonist on nasal mucosa in vivo is well known; however, the effect of the drug on tracheal smooth muscle has been rarely explored. ⋯ Zytec could inhibit electrical field stimulation induced spike contraction, and basal tension was increased at the same time. However, it alone had a minimal effect on the basal tension of trachea as the concentration increased. This study indicated that high concentrations of Zytec might actually inhibit parasympathetic function of the trachea.

Comparative StudyOptimal site for throat culture: tonsillar surface versus posterior pharyngeal wall.
To determine the optimal site of throat culture for the detection of potential pathogens by comparing culture results from the tonsillar surface and the posterior pharyngeal wall in children selected for adenotonsillectomy and in children without upper respiratory disease. Cotton culture swabs were taken from the tonsillar surface and the posterior pharyngeal wall of 50 children selected for adenotonsillectomy for symptoms of recurrent tonsillitis and/or adenotonsillar hypertrophy and of 50 children without upper respiratory disease. Potential respiratory pathogens were identified. ⋯ Group A beta-haemolytic streptococci were found in the samples of the posterior pharyngeal wall and the tonsillar surface in 17 and 13%, respectively (P = 0.2). When dealing with patients with sore throat, sampling both tonsillar surfaces is enough for the detection of group A beta-haemolytic streptococci. When detection of other bacteria is also important, such as for research purposes, the posterior pharyngeal wall should be sampled as well.
