Case ReportsSinonasal fibro-osseous hamartoma: case presentation and differential diagnosis with other fibro-osseous lesions involving the paranasal sinuses.
We present the case of a 2-year-old girl who was referred to the ENT Department of the Antwerp University with a bony obstruction of the left side of the nose. The lesion originated from the ethmoid roof and the middle turbinate and extended into the nasopharynx. ⋯ A combination of clinical, radiographic and histological information permitted a diagnosis of a benign fibro-osseous lesion: sinonasal hamartoma. The benign nature of this tumor justified a conservative follow-up.

Eucapnic voluntary hyperventilation in diagnosing exercise-induced laryngeal obstructions.
Exercise-induced laryngeal obstructions (EILOs) cause exercise-related respiratory symptoms (ERRS) and are important differential diagnoses to exercise-induced asthma. The diagnostic method for EILOs includes provocation to induce the obstruction followed by a verification of the obstruction and the degree thereof. The objective of the present study was to examine if a eucapnic voluntary hyperventilation (EVH) test could induce laryngeal obstructions laryngoscopically identical in subtypes and development as seen during an exercise test. ⋯ Amongst these, a linear correlation was found for the glottic obstruction. EVH tests can induce EILOs. However, the present test protocol needs adjustments to secure better visualisation of the larynx during provocation.

Lidocaine has been used as an injection or spray solution to protect spasm reaction during tracheal intubation and bronchoscopy. The effect of lidocaine for local anesthesia is well known. However, the effect of the drug to tracheal smooth muscle is not well explored. ⋯ Using the same concentration, the drug also could totally inhibit the electrical field stimulation-induced spike contraction. Lidocaine elicited a negligible response to the resting tension of trachea as the concentration increased. The study indicated that lidocaine could cause bronchodilation not only from blocking parasympathetic tone, but also from directly antagonizing the effect of cholinergic receptors.

Protection from epistaxis blood aerosol contamination: a novel use of a surgical facemask.
Epistaxis is one of the most common otorhinolaryngological emergencies. It is also one of the most common emergencies that places medical staff at risk of blood contamination. We report a simple yet extremely effective method in which a standard surgical facemask is worn by the patient, thereby reducing blood aerosol contamination without interfering with effective management.

The risk of overweight and obesity in children after tonsillectomy: a cross-sectional study.
The aim of this cross-sectional study was to determine the prevalence of tonsillectomy among secondary school children and to investigate whether tonsillectomy with or without adenoidectomy is a risk factor for childhood obesity. A total of 27 secondary schools with 12,296 students between the ages 11 and 17 were screened in Denizli, Turkey. We determined 129 students who had undergone tonsillectomy; each student was matched with two healthy control subjects of the same age and sex (n = 258). ⋯ There was no significant relationship between having tonsillectomy and being overweight or obese and physical exercise and screen time (p > 0.05 for each). Logistic regression analyses suggested no significant effect of tonsillectomy on overweight or obesity of the subjects (p > 0.05). It seems that tonsillectomy had no effect on overweight and obesity among children.
