Two-drape closed pocket technique: minimizing aerosolization in mastoid exploration during COVID-19 pandemic.
Mastoidectomy is associated with extensive bone-drilling which makes it a major aerosol generating procedure. Considering the ongoing COVID-19 global pandemic, it is essential to devise methods to minimize aerosolization and hence ensure safety of the healthcare workers during the operative procedure. ⋯ Two-drape closed pocket technique is an easy, cost-effective and safe method to limit aerosolization of tissue particles during mastoidectomy.

Biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease in severe obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome in the Chinese population.
Patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome are often accompanied by symptoms such as decreased cognitive function and daytime sleepiness, while cognitive function is often associated with biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease. Therefore, this study aims to explore the level of Alzheimer's disease biomarkers in the plasma of obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome patients as well as the relationship between cognitive function and daytime sleepiness. ⋯ Alzheimer's disease biomarkers in the plasma of obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome patients are higher than those in the control group, and the mechanism of action may be related to sleep disorders and night hypoxia. The Alzheimer's disease biomarkers deposited in plasma may also cause the decline of patients' cognitive function, increased daytime sleepiness and accelerate the progression of obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome.

ReviewThe possible mechanisms of the human microbiome in allergic diseases.
In the present paper, we discuss the importance of the microbiome in allergic disease. In this review paper, the data from the Medline (PubMed) and search engine of Kirikkale University were systematically searched for all relevant articles in June 15th, 2015 for the past 30 years. The keywords of "microbiome", "dysbiosis", "allergy", "allergic rhinitis", "allergic disease", "mechanisms" and "treatment" were used alone or together. ⋯ The nature of microbial exposure early in life appears to be important for the development of robust immune regulation; disruption of either the microbiota or the host response can trigger chronic inflammation. Dysbiosis is also an important clinical entity. Antibiotics, psychological and physical stress, and dietary factors contribute to intestinal dysbiosis.

Multicenter StudyTranexamic acid and post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage: propensity score and instrumental variable analyses.
Although post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage occurs rarely, it can be life-threatening. Previous studies showed that tranexamic acid (TXA) had insignificant association with the rate of post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage, but those findings were limited by small sample sizes. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of TXA in preventing post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage using nationwide database. ⋯ Administration of TXA from the day of tonsillectomy is not associated with reduction in reoperation or blood transfusion rates.
