Does an apple a day keep the oncologist away?
Apples have commonly been described as a healthy food. To understand better their role on risk of cancer at several sites, we analyzed data from multicenter case-control studies conducted between 1991 and 2002 in Italy. ⋯ This investigation found a consistent inverse association between apples and risk of various cancers.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of computed tomography (CT) and [(18)F]fluoro-deoxy-d-glucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) for prediction of progression-free survival of Hodgkin's disease (HD) and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) patients after completion of therapy. ⋯ Among lymphoma patients with PR and SD on CT, FDG-PET discriminated those destined to progress into a low risk of < or =20% and a high risk for recurrence of > or =80%.

Combination chemotherapy can cure patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), but those who suffer treatment failure or relapse still have a poor prognosis. High-dose chemotherapy (HDCT) with autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) can improve the outcome of these patients. We evaluated an intensified high-dose sequential chemotherapy program with a final myeloablative course. ⋯ We conclude that this regimen is feasible, tolerable and effective in patients with relapsed NHL. In contrast, the results in patients with progressive disease are unsatisfactory. This program is currently being modified by addition of rituximab for patients with relapsed aggressive NHL.

Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) has the worst prognosis of all B-cell lymphomas and has poor response to conventional therapy. It is characterized by the presence of a chromosomal translocation t(11:14) (q13;q32) which results in deregulated cyclin D1 expression. Since defects in cell cycle regulation and apoptosis are primary events in MCL, small-molecule inhibitors of cdks-cyclins may play an important role in the therapy of this disorder. CYC202 (Seliciclib, R-roscovitine; Cyclacel Ltd., Dundee, UK) is a purine analogue and a selective inhibitor of the cdk2-cyclin E as well as cdk7-cyclin H and cdk9-cyclin T. ⋯ Our data suggest that CYC202 is an active agent in MCL. The concomitant decrease of the phosphorylated and total forms of RNA polymerase II suggests that this could be the main mechanism mediating the biological effects of CYC202 in MCL cells. The drug might represent a new therapeutic agent in this lymphoma subtype.
