Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical Trial
Treatment of metastatic melanoma with combined chemotherapy containing cisplatin, vinblastine and dacarbazine (CVD) and biotherapy using interleukin-2 and interferon-alpha.
Metastatic melanoma is commonly treated with chemotherapy and/or biological agents used separately. In this study we have investigated the efficacy of combined chemotherapy using cisplatin, vinblastine, DTIC (CVD) and biological therapy using interleukin-2 (IL-2) and interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) in patients with metastatic melanoma. ⋯ The sequential combination of CVD with IL-2 + IFN-alpha appears to have produced an increase in the number of durable responses in patients with metastatic melanoma. The toxicity of this program, although severe, was manageable. The biochemotherapy regimen produced an apparent increase in the median survival compared to that observed with the CVD regimen. However, a prospective comparison of these two regimens will be required to confirm these observations.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Clinical Trial
A randomized, double-blind, multicentre study comparing daily 2 and 5 mg of tropisetron for the control of nausea and vomiting induced by low-dose cisplatin- or non-cisplatin-containing chemotherapy.
This study compares efficacy, safety and tolerability of 2 and 5 mg tropisetron in prevention of nausea and vomiting induced by low-dose cisplatin- or non-cisplatin-containing chemotherapy. ⋯ Once daily 5 mg tropisetron is superior to 2 mg for prevention of acute vomiting and nausea induced by low-dose cisplatin- or non-cisplatin chemotherapy regimens, but causes more headache.

Further chemotherapy versus low-dose involved-field radiotherapy as consolidation of complete remission after six cycles of alternating chemotherapy in patients with advance Hodgkin's disease. German Hodgkins' Study Group (GHSG).
It was the aim of this prospective randomized multicenter study to compare chemotherapy and radiotherapy as consolidation treatments in patients achieving complete remission (CR) after 6 cycles of doxorubicin-containing chemotherapy in advanced-stage Hodgkin's disease (HD). ⋯ No statistically significant differences in treatment efficacy were detected between 20 Gy IF radiotherapy and 1X (COPP + ABVD) chemotherapy following CR after six cycles of alternating chemotherapy in patients with advanced-stage HD. However, limited observations in a non-randomized cohort indicate that patients without consolidation treatment of CR after 6 cycles of chemotherapy may have an elevated risk of relapse.

Ondansetron versus granisetron, both combined with dexamethasone, in the prevention of cisplatin-induced emesis. Italian Group of Antiemetic Research.
Differences in pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic characteristics among serotonin-receptor antagonists have been reported in preclinical studies. This prompted us to carry out a study to determine whether such differences are important in terms of clinical efficacy or tolerability. ⋯ Ondansetron 8mg and granisetron 3 mg, both combined with dexamethasone, showed similar efficacy and tolerability in the prevention of cisplatin-induced emesis. The choice between the two regimens can be dictated by their respective purchase prices.

Cost-effectiveness of palliative chemotherapy in advanced gastrointestinal cancer.
Chemotherapy may relieve tumor-related symptoms, may improve quality of life and prolong survival in advanced gastrointestinal cancer. The extent of such improvements is unclear despite the extensive use of this treatment modality, and there are no studies concerning the economic cost of any gain achieved in the quantity and quality of life by chemotherapy. ⋯ The results of this study suggest that palliative chemotherapy is cost-effective in patients with advanced gastric and colorectal cancer. Knowledge about survival and quality of life benefits is still limited in patients suffering from gastric and pancreatic-biliary cancer.
