Efficacy of a single preoperative dose of pregabalin for postoperative pain after septoplasty.
We aimed to investigate the role of preoperative single dose of pregabalin for attenuating postoperative pain and analgesic consumption in patients undergoing septoplasty. One hundred forty-three patients with ASA physical status I who underwent elective septoplasty were included in this prospective, randomized, and controlled study. Subjects were randomized to receive pregabalin 75 mg, pregabalin 150 mg, and control group. ⋯ Visual analog scale scores in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 6th, 12th, and 24th hour were significantly decreased in 75 and 150 mg pregabalin group compared with the control group, and VAS scores in the 12th and 24th hour were significantly decreased in pregabalin 150 mg compared with 75 mg. The 24th total analgesic consumption was significantly decreased in pregabalin 75 mg and 150 mg groups compared with the control group. In conclusion, a single preoperative oral dose pregabalin 75 or 150 mg is an effective method for reducing postoperative pain and total analgesic consumption in patients undergoing septoplasty.

The effects of sevoflurane and isoflurane in nasal septal surgery.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of sevoflurane and isoflurane in nasal septal surgery in terms of intraoperative blood loss, operation time, recovery time, and especially postoperative pain. ⋯ Sevoflurane, which is one of the volatile anesthetics, leads to a lower amount of intraoperative bleeding, postoperative pain, and operation time than isoflurane during nasal septal surgery.

Effect of thermal welding tonsillectomy on emergence agitation.
: This study sought to examine the effect of thermal welding tonsillectomy that reduces pain and length of anesthesia on emergence agitation. A total of 60 patients (age range, 3–6 years) with chronic recurrent tonsillitis with an indication for tonsillectomy were included. Patients were randomly assigned to 2 groups. ⋯ The duration of anesthesia, operation, and delivery was significantly lower in the TW group as compared with the CD group (P = 0.000 < 0001). The pain and agitation scores were significantly lower in the TW group as compared with the CD group (P = 0.000 < 0001). We assume that, besides reducing pain and allowing surgery without bleeding, the TW tonsillectomy method diminishes emergence agitation induced by anesthetic agents, such as sevoflurane.

Hemodynamic changes comparing lidocaine HCl with epinephrine and articaine HCl with epinephrine.
The aim of the present study was to analyze hemodynamic changes after the administration of either 2% lidocaine with epinephrine 1:100,000 (L100) or 4% articaine with epinephrine 1:200,000 (A200) in the surgical removal of symmetrically positioned lower third molars. ⋯ The epinephrine concentration (1:100,000 or 1:200,000) and local anesthetic solutions used (2% lidocaine or 4% articaine) influenced hemodynamic parameters without perceptible clinical changes in healthy patients undergoing lower third molar removal.

An increase in blood pressure during dental treatment has been investigated with regard to potential medical risks since previous studies suggest that dental procedures may cause stress to the patient and, consequently, the cardiovascular system. The aim of the present study was to analyze hemodynamic changes following the administration of either 2% lidocaine (L100) or 4% articaine (A100) (both with epinephrine 1:100,000) in the surgical removal of symmetrically positioned lower third molars. ⋯ The hemodynamic parameters evaluated in third molar surgery with 2% lidocaine and 4% articaine (both with epinephrine 1:100,000) did not show significant differences.
