Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyApixaban versus Warfarin for the Prevention of Periprocedural Cerebral Thromboembolism in Atrial Fibrillation Ablation: Multicenter Prospective Randomized Study.
Stroke can be a life-threatening complication of atrial fibrillation (AF) catheter ablation. Uninterrupted warfarin treatment contributes to minimizing the risk of stroke complications. ⋯ Apixaban has similar safety and effectiveness to warfarin for the prevention of cerebral thromboembolism during the periprocedural period of AF ablation.

Multicenter Study Observational StudyEffect of ICD Therapies on Mortality in the OMNI Trial.
Analyses from primary prevention trials on implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) therapy have shown an association between shocks and increased mortality. Recent data suggest a similar association with antitachycardia pacing (ATP). ⋯ Patients receiving appropriate therapy of all types had increased mortality compared to those with no episodes. Furthermore, inappropriate ATP rarely precipitates ventricular arrhythmias.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyPulmonary Vein Isolation to Reduce Future Risk of Atrial Fibrillation in Patients Undergoing Typical Flutter Ablation: Results from a Randomized Pilot Study (REDUCE AF).
This study examined incidence of AF following cavotricuspid isthmus (CTI) ablation alone or CTI plus prophylactic pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) in patients presenting with isolated atrial flutter (AFL) with no history of AF. ⋯ Prophylactic PVI reduced new-onset AF in patients with lone atrial flutter.

Multicenter Study Comparative StudyAcute and Long-Term Outcomes of Catheter Ablation of Atrial Fibrillation Using the Second-Generation Cryoballoon versus Open-Irrigated Radiofrequency: A Multicenter Experience.
There are limited comparative data on catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation (CAAF) using the second-generation cryoballoon (CB-2) versus point-by-point radiofrequency (RF). This study examines the acute/long-term CAAF outcomes using these 2 strategies. ⋯ In this multicenter, retrospective, nonrandomized study, CAAF using CB-2 coupled with RF as occasionally required was associated with greater freedom from atrial arrhythmias at 12 months following a single procedure without antiarrhythmic therapy when compared to open-irrigated, non-force sensing RF, alone.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative StudySex Differences in Device Therapies for Ventricular Arrhythmias or Death in the Multicenter Automatic Defibrillator Implantation Trial With Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy (MADIT-CRT) Trial.
Studies suggest that women with ischemic heart disease are less likely to experience appropriate ICD therapies for ventricular arrhythmias (VT/VF). We evaluated the influence of sex on arrhythmic events or death in subjects enrolled in MADIT-CRT. ⋯ In this substudy of MADIT-CRT, sex, etiology of heart disease and type of device implanted significantly influenced subsequent risk for VT/VF or death. Women with ischemic heart disease and women with LBBB who received CRT-D had the lowest incidence of VT/VF or death when compared to men. Appropriate shock therapy was a strong predictor of death, particularly in women.
